Hi guys,

I just got home from work and had a look see and a whiff of the fermenter before i have a nap....

Now it smells fishy and not the good fishy. i am think it maybe infected.... I did have a very bad krausen explosion with this brew and i wiped with no rinse sanitiser and poured some in the air lock for good luck. Now it could only be in the airlock but i am not sure if i should lift the lid check to make sure it is not in the brew.

I was thinking would it be wise to check and then rack to a secondary? I have a cube here i used for a lager and i have rinsed and soaked with nappisan. i was going to run boiling hot water through and then transfer.

would that be the best thing to do if i check and its got a pellicle or something going on?

A fishy smell you say?
Where is Silo Ted when you need him???

Have you tasted it? Don't forget to pull the airlock out before you take your sample.

havent tasted it yet but have sample ready to go.

hmmm

its not given me a bad taste or after taste either but the bitterness is there..... Maybe the cheap mans IPA is going to be tasty....

Maybe.
Do you usually rack to a secondary?
If it's near or at FG then you may as well. If you just leave it in the primary to clean up, then maybe get a new, sanitised airlock in place, as it may just be something in there.

SG is 1014 and i dont rack but will try it with this one. glad wrapped the opening also on this. should be ready to bottle next week some time i think.

The new airlock would mean more washing..........

Yeah when i lifted the lid it smelled a bit fishy but nothing showing as the way as infections. I drained to the 5l mark and then about to was the yeast now.

As long as the sample tastes and smells fine don't worry about it. Some yeasts will through off some unwanted smells which get driven out of the beer by CO2.

No need to rack unless there's signs of infection growing on the surface.

Get rid of the lid completely and just use gladwrap and the rubber seal from the lid.
