Hi guys
here is my recipe for an AG I was going to do on Friday. It is my first so any advise would be appreciated
APA- 105.3SG, 52.4IBU, 14.6SRM
4kg Pale malts
1kg melanoidin malt

40g Cascade for 60 mins
20g Amarillo for 15 mins
20g Amarillo for 5 mins

WYeast 1332

Cheers Hugh
ps any tips for sparging? ie how many litres per min should I be aiming for?

25% melanoidin is going to be awfully malty and chewy. If you want a more typical lighter malt flavour for an APA, so the hops come through to the full, more pale malt and closer to 5% melanoidin might be better.

If your batch sparging it doesn't matter how fast you sparge, only if your fly sparging and then it's fairly slow, i think you want it to take at least an hour if i remember right. I need to do some more reading on that now actually...

Good luck!

I agree with Guest Lurker regarding the melanoidin.

Regarding sparging and water volumes, I'm guessing that you're after a 23litre batch or there abouts.
Mash in (5Kgs grain) 2.5 times the volume so 12.5 - 13 Litres of water, not sure if you're doing a mash out but I suggest a mash out step using 7-8litres of water (+90c) and sparging with approx 15 litres (+80c), which should give you somewhere close to 30 litres pre-boil.

It's probably best if you describe your set up - ie volumes, equipment etc, whether you will be batch sparging etc

If you mash in at 3 x the grain amount - you won't need the mash out step - just drain after an hour and fill the mash tun up again with your sparge water at about 76*

Remember that 1 kg of grain will soak up it's own weight in water

Are you using any brewing software?

Cheers

I used Promash for the recipe.
I have a esky with a s/s braid for the mash tun and a 35l pot. However I dont not have a burner to use. I went to get one today but the shop had closed early for easter and bow wont oper till tuesday. Does anyone know if I could get the burner at Bunnings in Adelaide? And what exactly do I need for a burner in terms of brands and regulators??
Cheers

I'm looking around for a burner too... can you tell me any more about the setup you got? was it a high pressure hose/regulator thingy? adjustable? $55 sounds like my kinda ballpark. How long does it take to get to a boil? Can I use my nature's credit card?
