it's an un-written law of sorts to not have a beer till' first hop addition is done ;)
I think the reason it is unwritten is so that it is easier to break.

Personally, I always brew first thing in the morning so it is less on an issue. If I brewed while it was still last night like Punkin here I'd be in all sorts of **** (and probably the burns unit of the Alfred).

True, I'm also an early starter so by the time I've added hops is usually at least 11am, then I stick some lunch on and have a beer when it's ready. There's no way I'd manage to start a brew after 3pm, well, start mabe, but I doubt it'd get finished

Onya Punkin, just a heads up though, it's an un-written law of sorts to not have a beer till' first hop addition is done ;) . Things can get a bit messy (especially if I'm brewing) if you hook in to early

Let us know how she goes

And this is the real reason why FWHing was invented ;)

Edit rather than post again for the post count nazis: As Andrew says below, your eff will most likely rise as you get farmiliar with the system & you make small tweeks each brew. And if it doesn't, well, you have consistency wich is alwasy a good thing

Seriously ? Only 69% efficiency on your first all grain brew? Pffft I'd give up now and go back to K&K because clearly your not trying hard enough.

Great effort for your first brew and 69% efficiency is a great result, you'll find over time the eff. will creep up as you become familiar with your system. From memory my first AG gave me 52% eff.

Hmmm, how is efficiency calculated?

Never been much into rules. There's one for fishing about not cracking a beer till you have a fish in the esky too....I'm usually cracking one at the ramp :icon_cheers:

Thanks for all the good wishes, Matty the only thing i will do different is to fix my braid so it won't come out of the bottom again, and to reconvert the big wort chiller i made from a full roll of half inch by hoseclamping some garden hose to it, back to a roll of 1/2" copper by unscrewing the hoseclamps. Then i'll take my small wortchiller i already had and convert it to a counterflow chiller with a bit of hose slid along the length.

I may just use the big boil pot for heating water too, rather than run my keg boiler as well. I'm bucketing the beer into the boiler and the water out, so it won't make any difference. I'll at least get another permanent car rim burner under the big pot.

Drinking this now as i'm washing up from my second run on a bastardised dr smurtos Golden.

This is the business, i can't believe i've been missing out on beer for so long :icon_chickcheers:

I'm loving it. :icon_drunk:

It really is awesome isn't it? I've got three FVs going hard at the moment and I'll be doing a fourth this weekend (after a bit of logistical racking from this to that to the other etc).... your transition has been quick and painless!

Nice one.

congratulations on taking the next step, coming from a newby to ag myself if you think your excited now, wait till that first glass is poured.
it's like being a proud father of a newborn  :icon_drunk:
cheers and i hope it goes well for you.

I too like to brew early as to not run into unexpected :icon_cheers: circumstances. Last week I was all done and washed up by lunch, One day off and had things to do after lunch :icon_drunk: so Strike water started heating at 5:45.
It's a great hobbie and very rewarding, stick with it fellas.

Drew

sorry, i didn't check the date on the first post.
i can relate to the hangover :D
so it turned out good after 11 days?
i've been doing a 2 week ferment followed by 3 days of crash chill, the reason i ask is i would really like to get a few brews in front by shortening the ferment by a few days and filtering. i suppose it depends on the yeast.

Nothing like All Grain brewing hey Punkin! I have only just started myself, had my first taste of the old Dr's golden ale on Sunday. A mate of mine preferred the Suffolk strong ale that was a partial mash. Told him he must be kidding himself cause there aint no flavour like those delicious hops!
