5 days into brew day I noticed there appear to be alot of sediment in my fermenter at the bottom (about 1 inch or so)

is it normal to have this much sediment at the bottom of the fermenter?

yep, thats just good old fashion yeastys, and a good amount of it too, meaning you had a good yeast count to begin with. nothing to worry about

When you bottle/rack your beer from that fermenter, fill the fermenter with a quater of water and then mix it around and pour it on the garden - the plants will love it.

If you are using chunks of hops they are known to be harmfull to animals if they eat them. So if you have a dog make sure you put the hops in the bin, cats.. well let them eat it fo all I care :D ;)

On the original question, yep it's normal it's a good idea to rack your beer to get it clear.

Thanks JJ and Muga.

Great tip muga for the garden btw!

Nah! keep it in some bottles in the fridge for a while under an inch or so of sterilised/boiled and cooled water. Taste the beer, if it made good beer use it again in a later batch. Thats what I would do, I'm just yeast mean :D , feed the plants!

Here is a tip for nuttin. If you are not going to rack your first brew and bottle straight from primary in to stubbies, pull the first one into a longneck or pet bottle as you will get a surge of yeast sediment from near the tap in the first one.It will then pour/fill clearer after that.
