Speculation that the Dublin Guinness Brewery property maybe sold off.

Full story here

Damm, that would be a shame, and a loss of history. Hope the bean counters don't get the final say.

Beers,
Doc

Diageo PLC, the world's biggest liquor company, may stop making Guinness at a 250-year-old Dublin site after reviewing its brewing operations in Ireland, where sales of the stout are dropping.

The company is "considering a number of important investment decisions on upgrading and renewing its brewing facilities in Ireland in the coming years," according to an e- mailed statement released today. "No decisions have been made or will be made until the assessment is completed," it said.

The St. James' Gate site, near the River Liffey, exports Guinness extract, the "essence" of the drink, to more than 45 countries. The site, where production began in 1759, also makes all Guinness for Ireland and the U.K. since Diageo closed its Park Royal brewery in London in 2005.

The amount of Guinness sold in Europe fell 7 percent in Diageo's fiscal first half as demand waned in Ireland and the U.K. Andrew Morgan, president of the London-based company's European division, said in April that Diageo is reversing cuts in its marketing budget for the region in an effort to boost sales of the dark brew.

Down 7%? so bloody what! Put out another brilliant ad campaign, don't close down a world famous Beer pilgrimage destination! :chug:

Sadly the skyrocketing "value" of inner city property will mean this will happen again and again I think.

It happened to Youngs in Wandsworth and it could happen to Guinness.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Guinness might just be a bit too iconic for them to make the decision in the end but only time will tell...

Nahhh... icons have no value these days. Real estate does. They will most likely turn the site into "studio apartments" for yuppie stockbrokers to live in. Apartments in which, said yuppie stockbrokers will no doubt be quaffing wine or low carb beers and sparing not a single thought on the history of the building.

It might even be a baseless threat to get some level of Irish govt to stump up a subsidy to keep it on as an icon.

I imagine the Irish people will be putting pressure on politicians to make sure that Guinness doesn't move on, which means Diageo might get an offer it can't refuse ($$$) to stay put.

would be a shame to lose the history but as someone has already said , real estate is worth more to the bean counters than history and tradition , how much do you think CUB got for the KEnt brewery on Broadway in Sydney , not that that compares to the history of guiness but just an example ...

iirc Guinness draught is a pretty low carb beer.

sure is happening everywhere, Lion Nathan is looking at selling its Khyber Pass brewery here in Auckland. The land is worth an absolute mint. The beer from there is macro brewed rubbish anyway, so I could care less.

I know the history of Guiness blah blah, but really it's just a macro as well. It doesn't matter a damn where they make the "extract to export" - wtf??

But it would be nice to see the buildings/site kept open as a historical attraction at the very least eh.

yeah, and bands are only cool until they're popular... right? being big doesn't necessarily mean being crap. and being a micro doesnt instantly make the beer any better. judge the brewery on the beer the put out. Guinness is good for you!
