Hey Brewers,

Does anyone know of an Australian supplier of DC geared motors? Ive found some at Jaycar and Ocean Controls but would like one a bit beefier and around the 100rpm range.

Cheers
Jye

Hi Jye

I presume you're looking to use this to drive a mill. If so, from what I've read you should be looking at a motor with around 60kg/cm torque (equivalent to 5.9 Nm or 52lbs/in).

If the specs are correct the Jaycar model MO-203 should do the trick at 50kg/cm and 140rpm. Next issue would be a power supply, it might be 12V but under full load it would draw 11.7A. A computer power supply unit (PSU) could probably do the job.

I'm a bit sceptical about the Jaycar motor, it's hard to see how this little unit lasting the distance under heavy load for any extended period of time.

A lot of people use a car wiper motor, as it has loads of torque, but it's on the slow side.

Cheers

G'day Jye,
It may be worth your while ringing around repair shops for mobility devices to track down an old elec wheelchair/ scooter motor. I came across a few a while ago (Andrew QLD was interested in one but freight was a killer). Anyway they run at about 120RPM at 24V and have a stack of torque. There are now a 3-4 Perth brewers running their grain mills of these.
Cheers

Doug I remember those from a while ago and would probably be ideal, might have a ring around next week unless someone has a spare :)

I've got one that is spare, freight Tas-Bris would suck.

If anyone in tas wants one drop me a PM, it is wired up ready to be connected to a 12V battery, even has a speed controller in line. I've thought about setting it up to run a spit roast.

I also have a roll cracker that I got made for crushing apricot and cherry pips, long story. It has a geared 1.1kW 240V motor and runs at about 30rpm, the gap between the rollers is about 6mm from memory, but this is adjustable. If anyone wants it I am will to sell it. It's practically new, only done maybe 50kg of apricot stone through it .

This pic is from underneath looking into the rollers, that is an apricot stone at the top of the image.
