Hi,

I kegged my beer on Saturday afternoon, gave it a shot of gas and loaded the corny into the fridge to condition.

Checked it Sunday morning and there was beer all over the bottom of the fridge, bummer.
Diagnosed the issue as a leaky out post, an issue with the poppet perhaps.

Following some research i depressed the out post in order to hopefully have it spring back into place correctly, then tipped the keg upside down (supposedly weight of beer should help seat the poppet valve).

Gave it another shot of gas to 300kpa and put it in the fridge.

Sunday night i went back out to check on the keg and there was a tiny bit of moisture on the top of the out post, but nothing like earlier in the day.

1) My question, will this leak be exposing my beer to the oxygen boogie man?
2) Will i have to give it more gas every day until i set up my keg fridge?
3) If I attach a disconnect and el-cheapo picnic tap to the out post, will this fix this issue of beer leaking out of the poppet valve?

I don't want to kill my Toucan which is tasting quite promising at this early stage!

Cheers,

3) If I attach a disconnect and el-cheapo picnic tap to the out post, will this fix this issue of beer leaking out of the poppet valve? Yes, though sounds like it's seated fine now anyway.

My guess is your poppet is not seating property, just clean the post with your sanitizer. Push the poppet down with something and spray a bit of sanitizer in there, gas it up again and bet it'll be good.
Sometimes you can even see a poppet sitting to one side.
I'm sure many of us gas a keg and see a poppet leak a bit, press it down and re-seat it, alls good.

Yup, quite a few times I've open the fridge door to be greeted by a puddle of spillage caused by a slightly off centre poppet - sticky.

If the poppet fails completely, they are available from Sponsors - I always have a spare one in my bits and bobs container.

Thanks Ross for the reassurance.

Thanks Batz for the sanitizer suggestion.

Going to check it in an hour or so when i get home from work. If no puddles i will leave it be (will check if there it any gas pressure in there by trying to quickly purge the keg).
Else I will try as you say and see if I can't get it to seat properly with a dose of sanitizer.

Thanks all.

You cam replace the seals on the poppet valve, you'll need some keg lube. I've found keg lube rubbed into the disconnect will help the valve seat properly as well, or just put a dab of it on the poppet before you connect the QD

I am surprised you gave it a whack of gas and trusted this keg, if i dont trust a keg I do as you did whack it with gas then spay the soapy water or shaken up sanitiser, you would soon see it.

Well, came home to more beer in all the wrong places. Had a good close look at the poppet (top down), it looked a little on the piss. I had at it with a screwdriver and a squirt of starsan. Looks more centrally seated this time. Another hit of gas and will monitor it again.

If this fails by morning i will get hold of the correct spanner tomorrow and swap out the post and associated valves and seals. I have a service kit here.

Would it be ok to do this service with the beer in the keg?
I imagine it is not ideal, however i have not got too many options.
