I'd love to have any information you have on Jever
OK, this is the somewhat limited info i got out of the guy from Jever:
-Using hops from different regions, including the Hallertau and Tettnang
-40 IBU, achieved by bittering and aroma additions, added at different times during the boil
-Please understand that we can't give you any more specific info
from their website: The pure and very soft water allows a higher addition of hops.
Jever used to be one of my favourites back in Germany, I hope to get an alright clone one day, as it's not really available here. Will have to bring a few bottles on my next visit.
The Flensburger guy was a bit more talkative. He went to great length to explain the difference between aroma and bittering hops.
About Flensburger Pilsener he said:
-use of aroma and bittering hops. As no extensive hop aroma is desired, both bittering and aroma hops are added at the beginning of the boil only, no late additions.
-Bittering hops includes Taurus and Herkules
-Aroma hops includes Spalter Select, Hallertauer Tradition and Tettnanger
-Tettnanger is their best hop, but also the most expensive one
-they're using German hops exclusively
-38 IBU
Flensburger Pilsener was the first beer I ever drank, as I grew up close to the brewery on the border to Denmark. In fact, my avatar is a made up brand of beer which a famous cartoon character from northern Germany (Werner) used to drink in its cartoon books in the eighties and later in the movies, and it was then also sold to the public with that logo. But the beer used was actually Flensburger Pilsener.
Blkstoff is still available in germany today, with changing labels for collection.
