Hi,

I'm wanting to make a batch of Bitter and would love some ideas on improving a previous KK brew.

Last time I used 1.7kg Classic Bitter from Mangrove Jack with 1kg of LDME and 12g of Galaxy steeped. I used US05. It was a pretty tasty brew!

This time I was thinking of adding 200g steeped Crystal and dry hopping the galaxy later in the ferment.

Has anyone done a tasty kits and bits Bitter? Any advice on anything else I can change or add?

Instead of the Mangrove Jack try a Coopers English Bitter with the malt and 150gms of crystal.(darn nice drop)

If you are after an English bitter style, use some fuggles as mattrox suggests, or east kent goldings with a bit of steeped crystal. Add it with 10 min to go on the boil, or just steep them.
 
I'm no bitter expert, but a lot of people prefer fuggles for bittering and EKG for late flavour and aroma. If you are using a hopped malt extract and only one late hop, I'd go with EKG as well for my tastes.
 
If you're after a little late hopping flavour and aroma you can look at EKG (as mentioned), styrians, willamette or challenger.

I've had good results with these, with the favourite being styrians. I haven't had as good results with fuggles late in the boil but I've only tried it on the one brew thus far.
 
Thanks for all the input guys. After a bit of a delay I put this brew down today:

1.7kg Mangrove Jack Classic Bitter (already had it)
1.0kg Light DME
0.1kg Dark Brown Sugar
0.15kg Dextrose
0.2kg light crystal
50g chocolate

Pitched US-05 from a 500ml starter I made yesterday.

OG: 1.045
FG: 1.010
ABV: 4.9%
EBC: 18
IBU: 33

Will dry hop next weekend.

Fingers crossed.
