Hi Brewers.

There is a plethora of Brewing related books out there. Some good. Some not so good.

Dont know if anyone has any ideas but I have been thinking that it could be good to have a Beer Brewing Book review.

One way it could work would be to have a separate section on the Site where books can be added and any one who has read or used a book could review or rate the book on a scale of 1-5 stars (or pints or stubbies or kegs)

Books could be categorised.

I for one would find this useful.

do a search on "books"
there's just been a big discussion on them

Mmmm.

Not quite what Im talking about Tangent. Sure theres a lot of info in a thread, but its not organised in any way and the thread covers one book here, one book there.

Also, when rating a book, its worth having several opinions combined to arrive at an averaged score or rating.

Im suggesting a "List" rather than a thread.

eg If I wanted to know what would be the best book re AG, I could go to the list, home in on the AG section, glance at the listed books immediately seeing an average rating and then drill down into reviews and comments.

Its a very helpful way of looking at books if you are considering buying from a website.

There are Brewing book websites....but frankly I trust and value the opinion of contributers to this site.

Ray Daniels - Designing Great Beers = Very useful, lots of info to help design your own receipes.

John Palmer - How to Brew = Very useful, especially when starting off on any type of brewing (AG/Partial/Extract)

Ang,
this site is currently being re-jigged by Dane.
Once he's finished, there will hopefully be a gallery, shop, recipe section etc.
I'm sure a book review section could fit in there somewhere, but at the moment it's the trusty search button.

I understand what you are saying Tears and its a great idea, no reason we cant start listing a few here, it will only add to the database and as Tangent said people can still search and find some books perhaps.

I havnt been brewing for very long but I have been very interested in the science and practice behind brewing since i could drink both at home and in the industry. Alot of the books im reading are not really for homebrewing yet relate to brewing non the less. At the moment Im currently reading 3 brewing books and have 2 other which I have read:

Huges, P.S. and Baxter E.D,. Beer Quality, Saftey and Nutritional Aspects. = Good book not all the way through it yet. This book discusses things such as apperance, taste and the nutritional value of beer, It looks at the chemistry behind those aspects of beer that are of particular interest to beer drinkers, namley flavour and nutritional aspects, in combination with a discussion of maintenance of quality and saftey, the areas more relevan to the brewing scientist.

Cascade: A taste of history, by Mike Bingham

I got this book from the Cascade brewery when I was in Tasmania in Christmas, im not aware if you can buy it anywere else. If anyone has a great interest in the cascade brewery and wants to borrow it PM me and we might be able to organise something. It contains infomation about the entire history of the company from its foundation to current day. Its a very good read about the life of a brewery and its people whether you like their beer or not.

Yeah Tangent.

Thats what Im suggesting. It would be really useful and if there is rejigging going on, that would be a good time for it.

Bravo Finite.

Thats exactly along thlines I think it should go.

I might just start putting them into a DB in anticipation.
With your permission, I would like to start with your reviews.

I will add another here later today.

I will just tinker with a concept and maybe it could be used by Dane when or if the time comes.

Thats a great start though.

cheers Tangent and Finite.
