I'm counting the days till I go AG and one of my interests is Belgians. Has anybody got a copy of or read 'Brew like a Monk' by Stan Hieronymus? ISBN13: 9780937381878 ISBN10: 093738187x

While I'm buying bits and getting organised I would like to read a bit and not just on here.

cheers

Yep, good book. Has a lot of history on the belgian breweries. I'm only 3/4"'s of the way thru and it's starting to go on more about the recipes. But the proceeding chapters giving the history give you a good idea of whats needed to make a belgian style brew.
The other one I'd really recommend is Randy Mosher's Radical Brewing.
I also got Ray Daniels, designing great beers, and while it's a great starter book, I think by the time I read it I'd learnt a lot of it from this site, or just chatting to people.

Yeh, it's an excellent book. As is Farmhouse Ales, if you want to make Saisons and Biere de Gardes. I'd agree with what MikaLika said about the Mosher and Daniels books. Radical Brewing has some fun ideas for interesting beers.

I agree, its an excellent book, though it isnt so much of a recpire book. It is kinda similar to Designing Great Beers, in that it gives you alot of info on the brewers and what kind of ingredients they use, hops, etc... rather than clone recipes. There are a few recipes up the back though, written by Belgian style brewers, that will give you a starting point to work from on most styles. One of the best aspects about the book is it gives you fermentation hints, like what kinda temps to let you ferment get to and stuff. If belgians are an interest of yours, then you will be very happy to have this book in your library.
All the best
Trent

I have three books on brewing:

Homebrewing for Dummies - bought by SWMBO as a gift when I was brewing kits.
Designing Great Beers - I bought this with a gift voucher and found it to be very good. Haven't touched it for a couple of months.
Brew Like A Monk - Love it! It's a good, easy read and gives a perspective on Belgian brewing that speaks to me and encouraged me to experiment in ways I hadn't previously contemplated. Great insight into some of the brewing operations and their history. Nice pics. Probably the most expensive book I've ever bought given what I've spent on things as a result of reading it.

Edit: Get the book name right!

you would love radical brewing PHI also have a look at extreme brewing too, it doesn't have chicken or anchovi beer  but some of the stuff in there is the next step down (kiwi fruit and mushrooms)

Would agree with all the books mentioned here.
Can endorse
Brewing for Dummies
Brew Like a Monk
Radical Brewing
Designing great beers
All provide differing and interesting perspectives on brewing and ideas for trying different things, before reading Radical Brewing and BLAM I wouldn't even consider putting sugar in a beer, but these books opened up some possibilities , the pictures of Moshers brew rig in the back of RB are drool worthy

Have you heard of "The Classic Beers of Belgium" by Professsor Guy Derdelinckx?

Plenty of tips on tasting, the flavours to expect from Belgian beers, many detailed reviews of many (dare I say all that were available at the time?) Belgian beers, brewing history and a list of breweries. :D :D

Maybe it's not what you want at the moment, but will be a superb reference in years to come. :excl:

I got my copy at the lhbs, so if you can't find the book, you might start by contacting MHB on this forum via personal message.

No (paid) affiliation...just a happy customer
