REVENGE was served cold and with a nice creamy head when a boutique Hunter Valley brewery kicked its mainstream rival, Victoria Bitter, into touch by signing a five-year deal to sponsor the Newcastle Knights.
Under the $4 million deal, VB's owners, Foster's Australia, will lose the sponsorship of the Knights and the rights to pour an estimated 100,000 litres of beer down the necks of Novocastrians attending matches at the club's home, EnergyAustralia stadium.
In case you thought the supporters of a working man's sport in an avowedly working man's town had suddenly developed a taste for premium beer, Bluetongue will use the sponsorship as a platform to launch a range of mainstream beers to take on market leaders VB and Toohey's New in the region.
Bluetongue's chairman, Ian Burford, yesterday had a tilt at his two big rivals, Foster's and Lion Nathan, brewer of Toohey's New.
"We would like to think that we are taking up the slack that Toohey's left when it closed down the brewery here in the 1980s."
