From todays SMH.

Here is a snippet of the article.

REVENGE was served cold and with a nice creamy head when a boutique Hunter Valley brewery kicked its mainstream rival, Victoria Bitter, into touch by signing a five-year deal to sponsor the Newcastle Knights.

Under the $4 million deal, VB's owners, Foster's Australia, will lose the sponsorship of the Knights and the rights to pour an estimated 100,000 litres of beer down the necks of Novocastrians attending matches at the club's home, EnergyAustralia stadium.

In case you thought the supporters of a working man's sport in an avowedly working man's town had suddenly developed a taste for premium beer, Bluetongue will use the sponsorship as a platform to launch a range of mainstream beers to take on market leaders VB and Toohey's New in the region.

Bluetongue's chairman, Ian Burford, yesterday had a tilt at his two big rivals, Foster's and Lion Nathan, brewer of Toohey's New.

"We would like to think that we are taking up the slack that Toohey's left when it closed down the brewery here in the 1980s."

Beers,
Doc

According to the interview on ABC radio this morning they are also planning on releasing 5 beers onto the local market before the start of the next footy season and taking their employee base from 40 at the current brewery to approx 1000 over the next few years as they attemp to rival the big boys.

Seeing will be believing.

Also interesting was the wager set with Johnsy that if the Knights win the next grand final by a 40 point margin the whole stadium will get shouted a round of beers.

Looks like I'll have to take back my criticism of Bluetongue now they are pumping millions into the club   At least I won't have to suffer VB at the games now :beerbang:

Go the Mighty Knights,

Shawn.

By a 40 point margin for farks sake I'd be happy for them to win by a 1 point margin go you knights go!!!!

Lets hope some of their new beers are an improvement...

But great to see them taking on the Knights & kicking Fosters into touch

cheers Ross

Yes one would hope that they will improve what they claim is beer. Their lager is absolute *****.

Lets hope that the Knights improve along with the beer... :p

As uninspiring as their current brews are (although the autumn seasonal was "too" bad) I would still drink it over fosters, T.new or VB any day.

We can only hope for a miracle.

I agree that it's good to see the Knights get a local sponsorship deal.

Hey, but it's also a kick in the guts to the Steel River Brewery, who have aimed their product, at least initially, at the big brewers and the average drinker.
I s'pose all is fair in the world of business.
I'm still waiting to see the release of Pig Iron lager.

As far as BlueTongue's beer is concerned, can they make a lesser product? The premium beers don't live up to the name, as it stands.

Brilliant news!

Now all we need is a local perth brewer to do the same. I have a dream! That little cretures sponsors the new perth rugby team. That would be a match made in heaven.

Seth,

don't know when you last checked steer rivers' website. It has changed and looks quite good. They have a list of where it's on tap already. I have also seen the ad in primetime tele too so it's gotta be out somehwere.
I however have not seen it anywhere, not that I've looked.

The lizard lager is not much better than the rest of the market's mega's :chug: so they should do quite well in that.
A bit more water for a mid strength and some foil printing on the label/neck and they fit the bill.
Speaking of bill (grain bill)
I read somewhere (maybe here) that the brewery does not mash?
Anyone have the inside info?

Brent,

U gotta be quick around here. U posted at the same time that I was posting to the Steel River thread. The Hamilton Station hotel is just round the corner from Mark's shop...I'm sure he'll be able to resist the urge, though.

Luke, I belive that these guys mash, but add sugar too. So it's not all-grain, but more like the megabrewers. Maybe because that's where most of the guys come from.
Don't forget that their curent product is "Premium", but the beer that the crowds will be able to buy at the footy will be "standard".

I just hope it's better than VB, or there will be a riot at every home game.

Seth :p

I was just up at blue tounge last week, during a quick holiday... i am still not a fan of their beers!! in truth i think their ginger beer is the best just because its different.
i'd say they will use the "bitter" for the games.... its essentially the same as VB and New..... Bad..!!! and a lager..?!!?!?
