I recently built my self a magnetic stir plate and I've been happy with the results.

Last night I stepped up a starter in a pyrex erlenmeyer flask and out of habbit gave it a shake to oxygenate.

Today in better light I noticed the flask was cracked in a pattern obviously from the stirbar impacting with it :(

:excl: Let the stir plate do the work :excl:

I have always been afraid that my stirrer will throw the bar at high speed.

I threw a 50mm stir bar at very high speed. luckily i caught it and had a second flask on hand.

I use 1/2 gal growlers for my starter vessels on the stir plate. Nice thick glass :p

Doc,

That looks like a concave base, is it?

I have tried to use a 2L glass juice bottle with a concave base however I can't get my stir bar to balance on it.

Looks like a wine demijon, I have a five lt one stashed away in my shed, I'll have to dig it out and have a look.

It is actually slightly convex, with very thick glass on the bottom.
My mag stirrer has very strong magnets and can control the stir bar through it nicely.
If you didn't have really strong magenets then it could be an issue.
