I thought i would make my first IPA AG batch on sunday with a mate off mine. Ive been working on my brew setup for some time now and every time i use it something needs to be added. So this week i was sure it was going to be a nice smooth run.
I filled my 40 ltr stainless pot for mash water an hour before my mate turned up so it would be ready at 11am. I got all the base malt pre cracked thats going to save me heaps of time. Great.
I got two hand held immersion elements now (After last weeks heat up 90min so i got up to mash temp in no time. (about 40 min) Alls going good. Thought id pre heat the mash tun so turned some vavles on fired up the pump no problem.
Now its about this time we get a wind storm so the bad luck ipa god decides to see how we run without power. Bugger....Thats ok i got the water up to temp so thats the major power problem. O thats right pumps need power too. Bugger.... Hold on i got a 800w inverter in the work truck Great... :) So at least i can run the pump... Went away came back when my mate trurned up and found id turned the worng valve and there was no water in the tun so got it right the second time but fogot to turn it off so all my mash water disappered and had to top up again with more so now my mash waters not up to temp... Bugger Out with the gas burner.
Got all this fixed and starrted the dough in i got a 55ltr esky and we where meant to put in 14 kg of grain (Doing a double batch high aclcohol) found the esky will only hold 12 kgs so now off to beer tools to re work the hop scheldlle. Thats right no power.. Bugger
One hour latter got the sparge water to temp and ready to re circ on with the pump NO FLOW. Turned all the right valves still no go. Bugger.

BANG CRASH SMASH.

What the hell. Look roung the side off the house and part of the tree in the empty block next door has smased the fench down and put 2 nice size holes in the tiles on the roof......BUGGER.. BUGGER

Now im not getting very happy. Stuck sparge, Holes in roof and now it looks like rain is on the way BUGGER..

Now im in a panic get the fishing knife out cut the QC on the mash tun do the old bodgy brothers trick great its working get the re circ going GREAT.. off to ring the insurance co to get the roof fixed 20 mins latter theres yelling from the shed my bodgy fix has come off and now where lossing sweet wort about 5lrs on the floor. BUGGER. still on the phone fixed up the leak got the sparge up again and it falls off agin. Another 2 ltrs on the floor. . . Fixed it again now the spage water down to 60 degs Bugger... Hold on i got 2 gas bottels and 2 burners. Great... So another half hour back up to temp. Half the worts in the boil pot half still in the mash tun temps going up and down holes in the roof looks like rains still coming the fench is down got to fix this to keep in the dogs, still no power, floors like velcro, Got to change the hop scheldue AGAIN thats right NO POWER... Maybe i should have stayed in bed.
SOME TIME LATTER.......
finally got it all done a few ltrs short and a good guess at the hops (glad i like a bitter beer 60IBU)was glad the day was over.

How was your day

Wow. Sounds like a hell of a day, especially for your first AG. Good on you for persevering though and I'd bet you end up with a lovely beer you can never reproduce. Things can only get better. :D

Hey ya stuster

Was not my first ag brew just my first IPA. its my second not like it changes much. But its sure going to take some time to work out the bugs in the setup. Its time like this you look at the setups the others have got and really appriciate them for what they are.
WORKS OF ART

Maybe the gods were trying to tell you something Lokpikn - if I were you I'd never brew an IPA again lol

Cheers
