Hi All,

I am trying to work out how to determine where the colour of my brew sits.

The recipe I used (not sure if it was off here) has it styled as an ‘American Pale Ale’. I used the brewbuilder program from my local HB store and it says that the colour should be 23, but when I put the same data into BS2 it says colour should be 10.

4.00 kg Ale (MEU Au)
0.30 kg Cara Pils (GER)
0.25 kg Pale Crystal Malt (TF UK)
0.10 Cara Aroma (GER)

60 Minute boil, 60 min mash (temp was a bit too high [~5 deg c], but I can accept this – I know it’s not ideal)

Now, according to this website http://www.twobeerdudes.com/beer/srm, which is the best reference and guide I could find... My beer sits in at 23 on this scale – certainly not at 10.

I do plan to enter this into a beer comp (not expecting much but I just want to do it) so my questions are:

1. Why the disparity in colour estimations between the two programs when the data entered was the same?

2. Should I enter it as an APA when the colour is a bit off from the BJCP that they will be using?

Cheers,

ROWDY

I brew for taste, not colour.

However, I agree the disparity is probably the difference between EBC and SRM. One is about twice the rate of the other.

Have a look at your settings in BS2, and adjust. As far as I know, EBC is the more common one used these days.
