Howdy fellow beer swilling chums,

Any suggestions on how to mill upto 5kg of grain without spending the big dollars? Surely I can't be the only one who needs to report expenditure back to the boss!!!!
Thoughts?

Lots of ways but none work well and all are painfully slow and frustrating

If there was an easy cheap way to do it, why would people have grain mills?

Get a mill!

Its the only way

cheers

Edit: got the "boss" to help you crack it with a rolling pin and he/she will order the mill for you!

Cheapest (free) way is to have the HBS mill it for you and then cryovac the milled grains. I know at least one or our site's sponsors who will mill and then vacuum seal for you free of charge.

When I first started doing partial mashes, none of the HBS I frequented would mill for you. I improvised for the first 2 or 3 batches by putting the grain, a bit at a time, into a plastic bag and then smashing the hell out of it with a rolling pin.

I bought a mill pretty damn quickly. ;)

would a coarse meat mincing machine do it ?

That will chop it up pumpy, husk and all.

As you know....... the onject it to roll the grain and crush the inner sperm (the white stuff inside :p ) and leave the hush relativly whole.

I have heard them all......... rolling pins, beer bottles, coffee grinders, mincers, food processors, running over it with your car, i even tries wrapping a bit at a time in a towl and hitting it with a brick.

I built a mill cause there were bugger all relativly cheap options on the market then, unlike now!

cheers

Maybe you could stick the grain in a paint tin with some large ball bearings, then stick it in one of those big mixer/shaker machines . that would be cool, bound to crush somethin.

i haven't tried the rolling pin, pasta roller etc etc, but i'm sure they're all excruciatingly painful. i have a corn grinder i picked up for relatively cheap that worked well, but 5kg was about half hour of constant winding and bit of a sore arm the next day. since then i moved to a crankandstein mill http://www.crankandstein.net/ - probably a cheap and really effective option. you'll need this sort of mill and an 800W plus drill unless you're a particularly masochistic person.

long story short if you're serious about AG brewing, getting a good mill is an investment and as tempting as painful and cheap may be at the point you're at right now, when you get a mill you'll be kicking yourself for not getting one sooner.

EDIT: cheaper option yet, many people use the "marga mill" around $100 IIRC...

Hey Maltdog,

I would suggest using any means to crush your malt (food processor worked well for my early batches). Better than paying at least double prices from a HB shop (some even charge to crush). Continue to buy your malt in bulk and crush it yourself and you will always be in front.

cheers

Darren

EDIT: Dont buy a Marga mill as you will soon realise it wasn't meant for the job and you could have paid a little more for a dedicated, purpose designed malt mill

where you from maltdog , im sure theres a brewer in your area that might help you out and crush some grain for ya , why dont you buy it crushed in the first place ?

Barramundi, Of course that is good advice but I just paid about $51 to put down 22 litres using cracked malt from the HBS and thought theres got to be a cheaper way. Just have to buy a mill I suppose.
