Does anyone have a chemical breakdown of water from Happy Valley reservoir? I cant find it on the Sa water site and the 07 water quality report only gives total hardness.
Cheers

Looks good, now back to Noonans book to work out whats next.

Tested a few months ago but should be relatively similar.....

Values in mg/L (ppm)

Ca 22.3
K 3.9
Mg 14.7
Na 75.6
SO4 16.6

Didnt measure for CO3 or Cl.

As a comparison, water from mains tap in the hills

Ca 20.4
K 3.6
Mg 10.6
Na 83.2
SO4 10.4

And rainwater from my tank (which i drink straight from the tank!)

Ca 0.9
K 0.4
Mg 0.8
Na 6.4
SO4 0.8

Cheers

Hmm, while you could get away without knowing the Cl, I would have thought the CO3 was of critical importance (to know)?

You can make a pretty good guesstimate if you look at the 5 year averages.

And for the rainwater you can safely assume its 4/5ths of bugger all!

Thanks DrSmurto, looks like rainwater with additaves is the go.

There is a later version available from here You need to search on terms in that spreadsheet to find it on the awqc site.

Hey Gregg_J

The high Na level is a hassle trying to balance the water and the Ca level also needs to be boosted to at least 50 for yeast health.
We use acid to drop the water pH and Calcium Carbonate to increase the Ca level

a little off topic, but i didnt want to start a new thread,

i use adelaide tap water, and was thinking of buying the ph stabiliser. is it worth it, will my ag's improve at all?/noticably. i brew ales.

cheers,

Lobo

You might want to narrow that down a tad Lobo - ales?

I brew English ales all the time so use Adelaide tap water for that. Prob should filter it but boiling it instead until i get an under bench pura tap.

For pilsners etc i use the rain water

dr smurto,

usually english pale alse, APA etc.

i use hot water straight from the tap. then heat it tht little bit extra.

Lobo

Straight from the hot water service?
I won't be trying your beers.

OK, an over-reaction but I won't be drinking large quantities of it.
Unless you filter all the heavy metals out first???

heavy metals? im sure it would be minimal.
