    Herms Build Version 1.0

Well I have been going to move my system to a HERMs setup for ages and I have finally taken the first step with the heat exchange unit. Pretty basic design along the lines of many others, I wanted a smaller vessel (4" pipe) rather than use the HLT. I've yet to give it a test run so I will see...

Corona Mills - Are They A World Of Pain?

I used one for a few years until getting a Crankenstein and it went great. I did the same as Runsty mentioned and put a bolt in place of the handle and powered it by drill. Also got a length of tire tube on the outlet to funnel the grain into the mash tun / bucket which made things cleaner. If...

    Arduino Development Thread

Pretty much the pic is blury. Pretty basic, 2 x 10k resistors in parallel connected to the data line for the pull up resistor and the other lines to ground. Have to decide if I want more than one temp senor on the line or not and play bout with multiple sensors .... Sure it won't be in...

    Arduino Development Thread

Well after much screwing about with the LCD board I have corrected all my soldering stuff ups and put the correct resistors in and I am away. All very basic for now but once I get some SSRs and time the brewery will be going electronic for better or worse :) Out of interest I got 10 DS18B20's...

40 X Single Glass Display Fridges

I've been to a few of those auctions and those fridges don't go cheap unfortunately :(

    Arduino Development Thread

Just when I didn't need another thing to tinker with all this discussion has got me ordering one of these to play about with

    Isopropyl As A Sterilizer.

I have some in a water spray bottle that I use to spray the taps on the fermenter every time I draw a sample off. I don't know about using it inside the fermenter but I figure a spray on the tap will give it a clean and leave not a lot of residue.

Looking To Buy A Ss Conical

I bought a 14gal Blichmann this year  does it make my beer any better, probably not ... but its my money. Certainly easy to use and cleaning is nice with stainless. I paid the extra for wheels so its easy to move about and the ability to pressure the beer out is essential unless you are...

How Do You Choose Which Yeast?

Usually the descriptions on the manufacturer's web site are a pretty good pointer, you will get some info on the flavor profile, attenuation etc ... also good to read how other people have found them on sites like AHB. Sometimes you just want to try a yeast :) there are so many it makes it...

What are you brewing II ?

Kegging capacity is limited at the moment so I went for a brew I wouldn't mind bottling so just pitched the yeast on a Dubbel, something for me to age until next winter (xmas over here). Used some of the liquid Belgian candi sugar from B3 in it (tasted nice!). Hopefully it will be a nice warming...

Alderwood Wood Smoker Chips In Australia?

Probably not a lot of chance it will improve before I head back in 2010, I may have to bring a stack back in my sea container :) May have to order some from this place soon as you can only get a few of the popular ones in chunk at the stores I have been to so far. Not sure I will try smoking...

Check Doc's blog under the blogs section, I know he is trying this at the moment.

Yeast Harvesting - Is This Method Viable?

I am sure it will produce a viable starter and I have done the same thing a number of times. I can't say I am an expert but the potential drawback could be that you are inherently collecting yeast with a low flocculation by gathering stuff from the secondary (given they didn't settle in the...

    Burners And Boiling

B&T I have a 20gal pot and I can boil that sucker over with a NASA. Usually the start of the boil is a lot less stable (foaming) but you can cut back the gas a lot to those burners to where the boil is not so vigorous. Also a spray bottle with water will knock that down quite well, once you are...

    Double Batch Calcs

Lots of ways you can crunch the numbers but you will lose hop utilisation with a higher gravity boil so base the IBU calcs on the actual boil gravity.

Gas In Beer Line - Serious Problem

How about filling a keg with good old water and doing some test pours, if the gas is getting in from the head space of the keg then you should still see it. preferably drink one of the misbehaving kegs and test it :D As others have pointed out it seems incredible that 12 kegs could all develop...

    Wort Chill Method

Have Immersion Chilled, No Chilled (couple of batches) and CFWC, now I just CFWC. Water is so cold over here that I had it at lager pitching temps straight from the chiller last weekend :)
