I personally, would be extremely wary about Ginger that cheap. Last time I bought Ginger at sub-$20/Kg, it was dry and tasteless.

I find that Craftbrewer's hops are far more fresher than my LHBSs irrespective of the fact that Craftbrewer is half the price, including shipping. On the flip side, I buy ALL of my grain locally.

My Chinook was VERY mature when I received it from Dazza. It's flying up the rope like nobody's business. Can't say much for the Columbus though. It was much smaller in size before planting and still quite slow to get up the rope.

I have a refractometer too :) I like to measure with a hydrometer also, specifically at post-fermentation. Considered a 250ml but thought that was too must wastage and the 100ml would be much better. Just worried the hydrometer might bottom out.

Google and Physics is your friend :) You'd probably be more interested in how long it would take rather than if it could be done. I worked out that if you were to bring 40L of water from 40degC to 70degC with a 52MJ three ring burner in a 50L keggle, ideally it would take about 4 hours...

Why not clip off the burrs now to encourage further growth? Stop the energy from going into the burrs so early.
