First lager seems to have been a disaster - is it worth it?

If it's only ever going to be just drinkable I'd rather tip it and get on with ales (just read a thread that mentioned this lager method using S-189 which may be the go next time) I have enough challenges right now :D , that's why I need the beer! :chug:

First lager seems to have been a disaster - is it worth it?

I used Budvar Wyeast, and still have it - 19lt keg and 5 Schwepps bottles, I did pitch more than for an ale, but probably not twice as much maybe 1.5 litre? Grain was 6kg for 25 litres I think, so pretty high. Maybe it does taste a bit like honey actually, not really butterscotch or sugary...

First lager seems to have been a disaster - is it worth it?

I've been doing AG English ales about a year and mostly really happy, as I'm getting cask ale that's better than anything locally availble. I've only had one disaster where I got the water wrong and ended up with nothing like beer. So I just tried a Czech pilsner, and what a pain in the arse...

Any point cleaning a keg that's going to be refilled straight away

Not sure why you think I'm interested in anyone's blessiings. Mhb gave me a good reason, no one else did. saying it's because it's dirty explains nothing. Anyway let's move on to something more interesting. Wasn't meaning to have pointless row.

That's fair enough - the thing with shortcuts is that only practice shows the dangerous from the acceptable.

    Bronce sparkler real ale machine

yes I have - I intend to do that, I'm just getting round to modding the jerry cans. I had a keg sat around doing nothing in the mean time and thought I'd experiment - came out great.

Any point cleaning a keg that's going to be refilled straight away

Crikey - I feel like I've been told off by half the forums now! I feel all dirty myself now  MHB - that is a fair point and an answer to my question with knowledge and without hearsay - thank you. Whether it's best practice or not, common forum "wisdom" or not - there is nothing that...

    Bronce sparkler real ale machine

It is yes. At the moment I'm emptying a fermenter into a jerry can and leaving it for a few weeks, and then serving from a keg. Wouldn't be any different using the jerry can though, I've just not rigged it up to the gas yet. Partly as it'll blow my house up, and the street along with it as...

I think the festival thing is maybe for judging - sparklers do change the taste a bit.

    Bronce sparkler real ale machine

I've been to many beer festivals and pubs all over the UK and as SE says it's all gravity feed straight from the pin/firkin. I'm from Yorkshire originally, and lived last six years of my sentence in Nottingham a mile or so from Hardy Hansons brewery. Pubs from the Midland north all without...

but starsan only works on clean kegs - boiling water will clean and sanitise better than starsan.

I have been stripping it down completely. Kettle full of boiling water sounds a good idea, I have time for that :D

Not a good example comparing with foodstuffs which are exposed to oxgyen, breath, and teeth. I'm not suggesting this is better than cleaning, but so far no one has offered any reason not to do it apart from "it's dirty".

Any point cleaning a keg that's going to be refilled straight away

The point is - why would this be more risky than cleaning it? The only reason I can see is if there is un-noticable infection in the keg it will likely grow more on the second usage. Other than that the risks seem the same as washing and using it. If it was clean then, why not now?

I've been searching for the best way to serve my real ale which is all I drink and the main reason for getting into home brew. Every option seemed expensive, messy or both, and I realised that most options were designed for pubs in the UK, not garages in Queensland. My ghetto beer engine served...

Any point cleaning a keg that's going to be refilled straight away

I only have one keg and I fill it from jerry cans used as secondary fermenters. I've just emptied one which I know was not infected, and I cannot see any reason to clean it between brews. I know you wouldn't do this repeatedly and obviously not ok to change from stout to lager, but apart from...

Sulphites in home brew? Any brew chemists out there?

Ok - accepted it can't be hops, which is good. I still think histamines or other amines. According to my allergist histamine containing and histamine releasing foods can be a problem. Some foods ferment in your guts and give off chemicals which could be a problem. Gluten - probably not as i'd...
