Arg, I was thinking the opposite. Want to explain?

    first batch a dud?

Different types of yeats behave in different ways. I reckon its kind of cool how different strains of yeast have different fermenting behaviors! Lager yeasts do not generally ferment as rigorusly as ale yeast and you don't always see a very visible krausen. The other thing is depending on what...

    AHB Trusted Opinions

This thread has obviously gone down the wrong path. I just wanted to point out that Screwy was very helpful to me when i first started. Really went out of his way to pass on his knowledge. Other than that manticle, yob and bum are quite helpful in answering questions i ask (usually about a...

    Claytons No Chill

My flame out hops are thrown into the cube. I have done this the last few times with good results. I figure its hot enough to break down the pellets, but not hot enough to isomerize them heaps.

    Sodium Perc question

I guess this is the answer I am looking for. I hope this is the case.

    Sodium Perc question

No i occasionally get them in all of my containers. The last one i got, i did 2 brews at the same time and they were both infected. I didn't use any cleaning agent last time. I thought they were fairly clean so i just gave them a spray and then used starsan. after using sodium percarbonate i...

    Sodium Perc question

Hi All, I have had a sodium perc mix (perc & met) in my fermenters for 3 days and I was wondering if its ok to just rinse it out, star-san and then transfer the brew from my no-chill cube. I ask the question because i have had a bit of trouble with infections recently and i read somewhere that...

Cleaning - Earth's Choice Laundry Soaker

I hadn't realised sodium perc was so cheap. Is there any benefit in having other ingredients as well, wouldnt they "clean" too? I dont really know how it works but dont some of them activate the active ingredient? I went through the supermarket and sniffed every bloody product, i cant tell the...

Cleaning - Earth's Choice Laundry Soaker

Has anyone used 'Earth's Choice Laundry Soaker' for cleaning the fermenters? I know many here use napisan, but this stuff was cheaper than napisan. It has: sodium carbonate, sodium suphate, sodium percabonate, sodium methyl ester sulphonate, Tetraacetylethylenediamine and enzyme(proteasa...

    Think we have an infection

That could be it. I usually soak mine overnight as well. But this time i didn't, because i had been reading online that most people just use the no rinse and that's it. usually I soak, rinse then use star-san. Its very depressing when this happens!! A full days work and money just down the drain.

    Think we have an infection

Thanks for responding screwy, the munich lager 2 was in the other fermenter (my fridge fits 2) which smells and tastes OK (is currently sitting on 1.040). That went in the same day with a 4 Litre starter as well. That's a Wyeast Private collection 2352. The one that I think is infected is a...

    Think we have an infection

Ferment too high - Have I buggered it?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diacetyl Its a butterscotch-like flavor that is a byproduct of fermentation. In a Lager it stands out, whereas it might be OK in an Ale.

Ferment too high - Have I buggered it?

Yeah I always do a D rest. i seem to get D sometimes even when the temp is bang on. If its just a bit of that ill be happy, but i am thinking i might have some funky yeast.

Ferment too high - Have I buggered it?

I'm not going too well at the moment. I put in the yeast last night (19:30) when i thought the thing was set to 12 (lager - wyeast 2308). I realized at lunch time today that the temp probe was sitting right where the cold air comes out and the temp was playing up it was really about 18/19!! and...

Low sparge temps - Ran out of gas

Cheers, Well I have pretty much hit my target SG as well (only about 0.02 off). But i am more worried, i guess, about the possible leaching of off flavours. Yeah, your right about the gas bottles, the one in my barby was flat as well!

Low sparge temps - Ran out of gas

Arg! Just when the brew day was going really well, something always has to happen! I ran out of gas (and somehow the spare was empty too) during the second runnings of my Batch sparge. At mash out i drained the second runnings (which was actually a bit low in temp, about 68, i think the temp...
