hi
yeah this is what i do when adding spec grains... soak 1/2 hour or so in water (temp 60-70/c) then strain ...then sparge with hot water (60-70/c) ...then add to the boil ...(minus spent grains of course) for getting rid of any nasties ...then added benefit of which is you can add some flavour...
well theres not much to it ...but if your want to know more read the airlocked threads in the all grain
section as theres a little more to it if your doing a larger mash ...spargeing etc...brew in a bag partials is how i started ...still do it..i'm no expert as i've only done a handful of all...
...i've never used smoked malt...but have mashed other grains ...i'm no expert mind you...but it dead easy and cannot see any reason why the smoked malt would be any different...take and preheat a thermos flask (since your only looking at 100g you'd use an esky if it was in the kilos[don't ask...
hmm that looks good...might give me a burl at that as well...may i ask any reason in particular you bailed on the wheat malt...just curious is all...can you please let us know what it turns out like ...
thanks simpletotoro
this method also works ...cheap as chips...
for starting out controlling your fermenting temps this options pretty cheap and basic as ....collect and freeze as many 2litre soft drink bottles as you can.....
go to Harvey Norman or someone like that and get a large carborad box....big enough to...
you could try this got one in the fridge ready to bottle .....last time i did this recipe it came up really well...though i didn't use Brewcraft Munich Lager kit ...just the normal coopers lager ...don't think there would be much difference between the two really once all the other stuff is...
yep your right....here goes...i was taught not to simmer specialty grains as you risk extracting tannins from the husks...steeping them at 80-85/c is ample to extract any of the sugars from crystal and the like...strain the grains out then sparge the grains with some recently boiled water say...
try this maybe ...
lets assume youve got bugger all money or want at this stage to spend bugger all money on brewing gear there will be plenty of time later on when you have more knowledge of the art of brewing to spend money believe me
and perhaps space is limited. .
here is my advice its only...
hi...you could also try a blow off tube...just a length of foodgrade hose pushed into the hole in the lid that you fit the airlock to...then other end of hose into a bucket with your choice of sanatiser in it...works a treat even when you reuse the yeast cake...cheap as well...
cheers simpletotoro
isn't that what they reackon Van Gogh was tripping out on when he loped of his ear and sent it post haste to his ex?

hi... i used to use an old fridge to do this...i needed 3 X 2 litre bottles frozen per day to get it down to temp.... then just one either side of the fermenter once i reached my target temp....best way to judge probably would be to do a trial run with water in a fermenter ....that way at least...
hi
i made this one up a while back came out pretty good...could have done with some wheat malt say 1/2kg in place of instead of dextrose and some of the LDM...ended up more black in colour then brown though...have used goldings before but prefer willamette for flavour to it ...probably not to...
jonny when using specialty grains you have to steep them first @ 80/c -ish ...for say 1/2 hour then strain the resulting liquid into a pot and you then MUST BOIL the resulting lquid for at least 5 mins 10 or more is better or you will get an infected brew...
the easy way to answer your...
hi...nice looking first brew ...won't add much except to stress the importantance of this statement from MHB
with that yeast i would ferment her out at around 18/c if you can...
your recipe sounds good and i tip me lid to ya for going the whole hog first time up ....maybe add some fuggles @...
