G'day All,

Well obviously we all use computers to access this slice of heaven....

So I want to upgrade my laptop hard drive (MacBook) from its 80gb to around 250gb or even better around 320 gb. I have found a western digital drive for around $260 (320gb - WD3200BEVT) but it is in W.A.

Was wondering if anyone knew of a stockist closer to the Newcastle region....or any cheaper places??

Cheers, Pok

I buy most of my stuff from www.eyo.com.au

Cheapest placce I have found for most thigts. Very reliable. Good service if stuff doesn't work. Ship same day if the order is in by 2pm. Next day otherwise.

They have a 250G WD for 190 (IDE) or 320 for 293 (SATA). The place in WA looks a bit cheaper based on the price you mentioned but you may get caught with higher shipping.

No affiliation etc etc etc.

Cheers
Dave

Not near you, but probably do mail order: umart.com.au

You didn't specifiy IDE or SATA, so I'm assuming IDE:

WD 250GB $173 (not in stock)
same drive from gamedude.com.au (for price comparison) $175

around the $250 mark for a 320gb sounds like the go.

I want to partition the drive to run both Mac OS and dreaded windoze. So a big drive will allow me to have a decent partition for both....maybe 250gb would be enough.... thats alot of brew porn!!

3x static ice

I also use Altech.com.au but i have a wholesale account...

glutton for punishment eh?

If a native Linux version of iTunes existed, I would be a Windows free household.

Well I need windoze for uni applications :( ... and also games are cheaper.... but I wont be letting the windoze partition near the internet let me tell you that!!!

Yes, I feel your pain. Don't let it near your OSX partition either. I had dualboot Kubuntu Linux and Vista. Vista decided it didn't want to share, and assimilated the Linux partition into the borg! I retaliated by wiping the entire disk and it is now Kubuntu only. I'm just lucky my beersmith recipes were backed up on a USB flash drive. But I had to reinstall XP and itunes on the old laptop for SWMBO's ipod.

These guys in Sydney (https://www.mtechcomputers.com.au) can have it delivered for $266.... thats for the 320gb Western Digital drive express posted.

Seems like a good deal to me.

Pok

P.S. It is a SATA drive by the way.

Cheers, Pok

let me know how you go mate, my macbook is getting a little full.
Each project of mine ends up at about 15-20GB so if I have too many projects running at once, things get a little cramped.
Do you have to put your old drive in an external case and copy all your crap from it while booted from the CD?

That would be the only way to do it I would imagine. Luckily I already have an external case.... how ever its USB so could take awhile... O well it can be done while I'm asleep.

There is programs out there that should make it easier ... one called SuperDuper!, I haven't got it let alone used it but could be the answer. I just dont want to pay for it.

If you unsure about changing the drive, there is a clip on you tube showing how to do it, no harder than removing the RAM...and I'm serious.

Cheers, Pok

P.S. Ordered the drive today... hopefully have it by the end of the week. Then time to play around and get 10.5 up and running before uni is back next week :D

harris technology sells cheap gear and will generally beat or at least match any advertised price (internet or printed).

I know this is heading off topic..
I dont like apple so i would never try anything apple related.
But why doesnt Itunes run under Wine? I am yet to find an app that you cant get going in wine

I tried two different versions of iTunes under the latest wine. The latest that will install is 7.3 series, but it gave me pagefaults. Easier to just install XP for SWMBO than deal with that.

Why is that?? Pet hate? Or the desire to run with an inferior product like windoze? (sorry had to put that one in there :p).

But seriously, why?

Cheers, Pok

p.s. Thanks for all the help folks. Hopefully drive will be here by the end of the week :D

Bonj, what about Rhythmbox or Banshee under Linux? I use them both with iPods. In fact they are better than iTunes since they have no quibles with exchanging tunes with and iPod you don't own.

Or does the Mrs want to purchase from iTunes?

if Apple made everything, toasters, coffee machines, cars, I'd buy the lot. My life has been so much easier running Mac stuff. I don't want to tweak settings and customise stuff, I just want it to work, which it does.
