Having just enjoyed Sluggerdogs vanilla porter (my first), I've been inspired to give one a go - gone closer to Doc's original bourbon recipe... Any comments?

Looks tasty Ross,
i just brewed a porter on the weekend using poweels for the first time as the base and plenty of JWM choc and some amber and wheat for good measure. Its for my old man for his birthday/christmas and i was thinking of the coffee bean addition at secondary (he loves his coffee) but a little vanilla would be a great thing too... what are you using for that.? beans, esssence??
i also Fuggled for flavour and aroma with NB to bitter.
hope i can hand it over when the time comes. ;)

I was going to use 2 beans - but we have vanilla extract (not essence) in the house, wich I am told is every bit as good as the bean, without the hassle - so will add this instead (probably to keg) - will also make it easier to bring the vanilla to the level I want...

cheers Ross

hmmm, dont think you would require much 'extract' to acheive the levels of 2 beans... sounds like a better way to go though.
will be good to hear your results.

Ross with ther extract does it say how much is equal to 1 bean? Reason being I woudln't want to over do the vanilla. I think 2 beans would be the maximum I would put in, anymore and that would be all you could taste.

Extract would be a better idea however I have beans easily available to me so I went that path.

Sluggerdog, I think it's half a teaspoon to 1 bean, buy I'll make sure before using. Will also add probably half the amount & taste first, as I'm guessing it will have a slightly stonger effect...

Ross,
how much vanilla extract did you end up adding.? and to where.. keg.?
what would you then recommend for a adding to secondary before bottling. I've got a robust porter planed for 2 weeks from now.

Sorry Kong, missed your earlier post - they fly off the board so quick these days...

I added 1 teaspoon of Vanilla extract to the keg (equivalent to 2 beans) - Added half a teaspoon first, but ended up adding another one to my taste - easier to add more than take away ;)

cheers Ross

Cheers Ross,
i think i'll go one teaspoon, see how that goes.
i see you have another one planned.. (i gather thats what VM porter is)
