Got an email from Marcus the brewer
"we will be rolling out a new range of wort-kits in 20L drums very soon"

"It is thought as a convenient way for the semi-professional homebrewer, to make your favorite Scharers beers at home without the mess of real brewing"

Interesting development

Obviously some good money to be made in fresh wort kits....Hmmmmm...time to investigate a little further me thinks B)

cheers Ross

Hey Mike,

I am very very keen for a Scharer's wort-kit.

Do you have any more info on where and when I might be able to get it.

Cheers
OSF

Will they come pre-infected or do you need to do that yourself? :p

Only kidding, the only time I ever tried their beer (Burragorang Bock) it was awesome...

The Bock was quite nice but I was never a fan of the lager...yuk!

mikem108,

You going to be the offical AHB 'guinea pig' and brew 60 litres of the stuff and check the consistancy??

or is it 'Lexi left overs'??

stirring the mash :super:

Stirring the mash , :p :p

But honesty, from what I hear, the Lexie stuff has long been dumped .

Going down there shortly and looking foward to some of the good old Picton pub brew.

thats a long way from qld for an average beer...

So much negativity for some a postive thread.

Shame shame shame.

I'll be down at the George as soon as they are available.

I quite like d the Bock when I had it on the AHB pub crawl, which is why I emailed Marcus about how he made it, his email was very involved and detailed but the only info I have about the availability of the wort kits is what I posted, perhaps drop them a line if you are interested and they can gauge the demand.
The yeast is Saflager W-34/70 which I've just used for the first time myself with great success

I also liked the Bock from the AHB crawl and I also have a case of the Scharers Lager that I like. I think both beers are far above most commercial beers and not sure if it deserves all the negative comments.
Saying that I did not taste the beers a few years ago when the beer was supposed to be inconsistant at best.

I would give the wort kits a go just to see what there like. Its all part of the fun. :chug:

If it's as good as when Marcus made it when I was a local a few years ago it's more than an average beer mate.
Both the lager and bock are way above anything commercial , and they use to cost a little bit more than that gassy muck they served out of the tap down the road.
Just hope the new owners didn't put the price up too much.

i've drunk a lot of this stuff over the years and it really has gone up and down - was only ever actually infected (like REALLY BAD) back in about '99 or something.

however it always has DMS. dunno whether the wortkit process will help that...
a lot of yer traditional village brewery bavarian lagers do have DMS so i guess this is authentic in a way, but still it gets a bit much for me. greg the CEO from stone met up with a few of us from ratebeer at the australian a few years back and said "this beer's got a bit of a DMS thing going on" - but then anything with under 70 IBUs was not going to impress him.

judging by the episode content for upcoming episodes they arent even producing the bottled beer on site anymore.

however it always has DMS.

DMS or Diacetyl? The malt they have at the moment is not high in DMBS Precursor and i could not see their plant or process encouraging DMS formation.

Whatever it is no issue for me, i like both in the right situation particuarly DMS, i just wish large Aussie brewers did not see it as fault.
