Hey Guys,

I am thinking of brewing a batch with 1 malt and 1 hop as I just want to get to know the flavours of a single malt and hop. I have brewed a few all grain recipes now and most have been really nice but I don't know what grain or hop im necessarily tasting. Here is what I have come up with. Any thoughts welcome. cheers
42L batch
10kg Ale malt BB
0.2kg Carafoam
Cascade 60g @ 80min
Cascade 20g @ 20min
Cascade 30g @ 10min
Cascade 30g @ 5min
Cascade 30g @ 80deg after flameout.

Wyeast 1272

IBU-31
OG-1.055
FG-1.014

Seems ok to me, I would be inclined to drop the carafoam but if you think you need it then go for it. Other options if have the ability is to split the boil in two and use different hops. Once you have your base grains figured out do a run with diff specialty malts. Maybe 93/7 base malt to specialty malt.

Not sure if I can split it because I have a 50L Braumeister. But I will drop the carafoam and maybe mash @ 66deg

Splitting in some form is great. I've done a few SMaSH beers and it certainly helped me alot (with grains and hop flavours etc). I have, at times, ended up with full batches of informative and drinkable beer that I really didn't like. If you have some 5L demijohns or similar you can do a basic bittering addition and then do a heap of different hops dry hopped a few days into primary.

I've given SMaSHs away for a while...just trying to make a decent beer with some relatively consistent results.

Anyway, either way - if you don't like the results of this recipe feel free to send me as many bottles of it as you want...

No worries mate see how I go.

I'd agree with Lecterfan - SMaSHes are a fantastic teaching method, you learn so much. But you do end up with fairly one-dimensional beer.

Having said that, if it weren't for SMaSH, I'd have not stumbled across my very replicable formula for house APA (and how the figures in brewmate equate to actual flavour):

91% Base Malt
9% Nice Spec Malt

15IBU worth of a hop at 30m
10-15 IBU worth of something else (or a combination of hops of a similar nature - i.e don't whack Saaz with Galaxy, it's kinda pointless) at 10m

US-05.

I've tried it with about 10 hop varieties, a number of spec malts and settled on Bairds or Thomas Fawcett's Perle Malt as the base malt.

Consistent great results, and something I feel happy sharing with others (both to drink and the recipe).

I'll have to consider giving that a go. Thanks for the info and the recipe. I should be able to get a good idea of what a single malt tastes like that way too.

Same, in fact I have a keg full of a smash with cascade right now, turns out cascade alone isn't very balanced for my taste but what are you gonna do :icon_cheers:

Well if it tastes drinkable i'll be happy. Just want to try to get a sence of certain hops and grain in 1 beer. Might go down the 5L Demijohn track and use dry hops as stated by the op.

Good idea. I dry hopped with 20g in 18l and thought it could have done with more, I reckon it'd be good to try 2g/l

*in fact I checked my recipe and I used and it was 10g first wort hop, 12g at 45, 30 and 15 and dry hopped with 20g while cold conditioning and yeah I'd still like a bit more flavour and aroma out of it so go hard I reckon, if you really want to experience a hop no point in just getting a whiff of it ;)

Out of mine I'm getting strong citrus, mostly lemon which makes me think it would be better mashed a bit higher or a decent bit of crystal used. It's very light and refreshing now, almost too light.

Yeah mate thats true. I like a nice hoppy beer as well but I would also like to taste the malts to get a good feel of that side of things as well. I might even get the small malt pipe for the Braumeister and try Goombas recipe idea with mostly base malt and some spec malt and hop schedual as stated in other post. Then at least I'll be able to drink it, learn and be happy :D

Stick with Crystal or Caramunich if you want the maltiness to come through.

Given it's summer here, I've replaced it with red wheat to lighten it up a little, but that's to my taste.

That's why the recipe works - the basics are in place, just tweak to your ingredients and preferences.

I am just reading the "WHEAT" book now and see a few recipes in there with red wheat so I might just give that a go.
Cheers mate
