What style of AG beer would this recipe be?? And would it be any good to brew??
3 kg pale malt ( 2 row)
1.5 kg crystal malt 30l
500 g carapils
500g caramunich 2
500g flacked rye

30 g Cascade ( 50 min)
30 g cascade ( 30 mins)
30 g cascade ( 5 min)
WLP 001 yeast

Not with all that specialty grain in it, especially the 1.5k of crystal malt and carapils.

tone that down to between 5 and 10% of the total grain bill and you've got an interesting looking APA.

There's way too much crystal but reduce the total crystal amount to 15% or less of the grist (use mostly the Caramunich II) and you'll have an American Amber Ale.

What abv are you going for and what is your mash efficiency like? 3 kg at 70% will hit around 1040.

If you want an apa, you might add another kg of base, drop the total caramel/crystal to around 250 ( so crystal + caramunich< 300g).

I'd rather use my mash schedule to get body than use carapils but each to their own. What's the rye for?

Pale malt + 1 crystal + cascade will make a nice beer. Replace some base with malted rye if you want a sticky, spicy element in the finished beer.

All of the above assumes a 20-25 L batch size.

I will tone the crystal down to .5 kg
And see how it goes i think.

i think i will do exactly what you said
Im after an OG of more around the 1050 mark

I'd also change the hop additions to 60, 15 and 0 minutes. A 30 minute one will rob you of some of the hop flavour.

Ok ive done a few adjustments

4 kg pale grain
.5kg crystal
.5 kg caramunich
.5 kg carapils
.5 kg flaked rye

40 g cascade 60min
30 g cascade 15 min
30 g cascade 0 min

OG 1055
IBU 30.0

Will give it a crack and see what happens ay

By the way as you can probly tell im new to AG and am using the BIAB method. I am still reading about and experimenting with what grains do what and how much etc

That's a good question. If you're looking to experiment with different grains, I'd try things separately so you can learn what each grain brings to the table. I say this from experience. I sort of assumed that I'd just learn along the way, but you really can't. I now brew a lot of SMaSHs and "1 base + 1 spec" brews to learn. You can still make some great beers while you learn.

FWIW, I haven't made it to trying rye yet, so I'm actually interested in what you think it adds.

That's still way too much crystal malt mate, use either the crystal or the caramunich and cut the carapils in half.

I've settled on about 2% medium crystal in pale ales for my tastes, I couldn't go back to 10%+, too cloying.
