Or glass. I have stored my phos for the last 6 months in a 1125ml scotch bottle without any problems.

Mothballs,
You beat me to it. :p

Hey, I understand that you can store in glass, poly etc but I would not recommend it. All acid based chemicals give off gases and should be treated with respect. The proper containers as recommended by the manufacturer, I think, is the only way to go. Acids need to breathe. Please be carefull

I wouldn't want to drop a glass bottle full of acid ... although, come to think of it, i guess dropping anything full of acid is a bad idea

you may well be correct here?
All I know is that I had 1 litre of phos in my 1125ml scotch bottle & 6 months later (After opening the bottle at 3-4 weekly intervals for brewing purposes) all is well.

I am not an expert here, but phos seems to be a mild acidic compared to hydrochloric, etc. A specialisied container store assured me that the normal 5 litre container (polypropylene?) for oil, etc is quite ok. I can only assume they are right as I have 5 litres of the stuff to store away.

Hey Lindsey, what the hell are you doing with Milton in the house mate? Something you want to PM me about??

Wes

I am getting some from Tidal Pete this weekend. Using rinsed out 5L plastic swimming pool acid (hydrochloric) container. You should be able to get some of these just about anywhere, try a pool shop even.

Yep,
Get the right container. For some reason phosphoric acid at my work comes in shatter proof glass.

I store mine in 1 litre HDPE bottles, Nalgene style which I can pick up for nicks at work.

May I also suggest a good sanitizer, Proxitane, it can be bought from some pool shops or chemical wholesalers. Need to wear gloves and safety glasses until diluted 2ml per litre.

Sodium Hydroxide is a good cleaner for all your equipment, but needs to be rinsed thoroughly. Happy Brewing :chug:

Hawko - phosphoric acid is an effective sanitizer when mixed to pH 2 or lower. I don't use it for cleaning, sanitizing only.

I only use sodium hydroxide rarely since it is nasty stuff to handle in my book and sodium percarbonate is effective for all my brewery cleaning needs.

Phosphoric Acid is what I use to sanitize, and when I get my micro up and running it is also what i will be using. It is available from dairy supply stores in 20ltr drums for about $170 and needs to be diluted.Unfortunatly it is not very good for the environment and council are making me store it in tanks for off-site disposal.
The product is called " Dairy Power CB Acid"

Sodium Percarbonate will be the cleaner used because it is freindly to the environment and it works very well.

Their is also a product that Ross put me onto that is basically hydrogen peroxide and colloidal silver ions that nurseries use....yet to find an MSDS fo it yet

Bleach sux and should have no place in a brewery

Wes, bought it wholly and soley for storing fermenter taps.
No more kids, still trying to evict the first born!! Bought a Unit and rented it out.....fairdinkum!!

Had a Ropey Bacillus infection 3 years ago. Turned my rum molasses wash into something resembling a stringy bucket of snot. Used to use Sodium Met, but advised by Still Spirits to use bleach for all threads, seals etc. Since then keep 2L ice cream container of 10:1 bleach with lid on. Pop in taps seals, airlocks etc the night before brew day. Rinse before and refit seals and attach to fermenter sanitised with Phos, no problems since.
