I ordered 6pounds (6 different varieties) from Hops direct.
Placed the order last wednesday (3rd March), delivered on friday (12th March).
Hops were $US50, postage was $US56.

The box was opened and resealed by AQIS, but none of the vac-packed hops were touched.
What most surprised me was that EVERY one of the 6 packs weighs >520gm (1Lb = 440gm as far as I'm aware).
Even better value for money than expected!!!

Here's a gratuitous photo that serves no purpose :p ...

Why is there such a huge markup on hops in Australia?

My order went through on the 4th got in Aust on the 8th still waiting for them hoping I'll get them on monday cause I'm away on tuesday for a week

ordered on the 4th as well, heres hoping there turn up tomorrow :D

How does the postage work? Is 5lb a good tradeoff between postage cost and amount sent?

What's the postage on 2lbs? Or is it not worth it then? It's take me two years (just worked it out) to use 5lbs of hops!

Nick, it may worth a try putting out a call to brewers in your area for anyone willing to split a 5lb order with you.

In late January, I ordered a 6 lb lot which came in a USPS flat rate box and came thru in about 2 weeks. Postage was 66 AUD. On Febuary 17th, I ordered 12 lb, postage was AU$130 and arrived on 6th March. This lot spent time at AQUIS but none of the packs were opened.
I phoned the farm to discuss postage and they like to limit the flat rate box to 6 lb and then they revert to their own carton. Rates for that were pretty close to US$10/lb in the quantities we buy at. The max weight of the Standard flat rate box is 20 lb and when I indicated to the lady at the farm that the 6 lb delivery had space enough for two and possibly three more pounds, she was happy to try, but then my second order went to 12 lb so we didn't bother. If you wanted to get a couple of extra pounds in the flat rate box, its worth getting up early and phoning them. My 7 1/2 minute call cost $1.00. A recent 47 minute call to the same region cost all of $2.50 (thru iinet)

i just ordered 10lb a couple of days ago and postage is $84.50USD up to 10lbs.
they said 6lb would be $55.95USD.
also if you pay by paypal it costs you about $10USD extra, so you are better off paying by credit card if you can.

Cheers,

Stewart

Just wondering do you have to sign for the delivery or do they just dump it on the front door

Just got an email from hops direct and they are offering a 5% discount this month and with the Aussie dollar at 92.2c US today, it might be a good time to buy.

Bloody oath.

I'd be keen on some American hops, Cascade, Chinook, Amarillo, Columbus, Willamette. Don't need massive quantities though. A pound of each would probably be too much at this stage.

Anyone in Brisbane want to do half pounds of several varieties? I have a vac sealer.

1/2 pound is about 225 grams.

Really? A pound is too much? That's like 5 brews @ 22 litres. So 6lbs would give you 30 brews. Drinking 19ltrs a week that's around 30 and a bit weeks of beer.

Now I can go through 19 litres and then some if mates come round so I can't wait to order from hops direct.

Anyone keen to split an order with me?

You would get...

225g Amarillo
450g Cascade
225g Columbus
225g Chinook
225g Willamette

For about $60 AUD

That would be for local people. I could split and post as well I guess. Could even vacuum seal for a little bit extra.

I want a full pound of Cascade but I could change your full pound to be of any one variety.

PM me.

Mine were just dumped. By the time I answered the doorbell, he was back in his van and the hops were at my feet.

Pete, I'd split some with you if you wanted. I am after Centennial, Chinook and Liberty. Maybe 1/2 pounds of each. You could get and extra pound of something you wanted and it would round out to 2 pounds. What say ye?
