Guys, having a couple of Montieths Black's - my wife loves it and has 'comissioned' me to make and bottle a clone. I searched and didn't get anything in the recipe forums..

What style is it? Maybe a chocolately, malty porter? I've never had a porter, but this is black and malty (not fruity), with not much hop at all.

If I can figure out the style, I can search a bit harder and find a decent recipe. '

Cheers - Mike

ok in my tour of the montieths brewery in nz
they use about 5 malts

they use pils as base then choc ,munich(they call amber) cyrstal maltand i reckon melondiaden would go well in that or i would make a porter type beer

Yeah, I can taste the Pils and the choc and the munich- it's going to be a toughee to make ex kit, I guess start with a Pils and just mash lots and lots of specialty grains without going over the top?

Schwarz Beer Mike, and the bottled stuff we get here is brewed in Auckland. The draft still comes from Greymouth (I think) but may also now be brewed in Timaru. A Schwarz is usually around 4% alcohol and based on pils, munich and roasted malts. Most commercial brews today, including the European versions use colouring agents like Weyermann Sinamar to achieve the colour without skewing the flavour. I would suspect that Monteiths use some maltodextrin syrup to lift the body and mouthfeel as well. That is probably giving the "sweetness"

i didn seen of that in the brewery but i seen bags of dextrose around the join and lots of malt sacks

forgot they also bottle the black at greymouth as the guider told us the black and the original are brewed at greymouht the rest by db in auckland

Whatever this means
Monteiths said:
Monteiths Black Beer has an Original Gravity (OG) of 1051, alcohol of 5.2% and a final gravity of 1012+. This combination provides a rich smooth body that continues to develop as the beer is enjoyed.

Monteiths Black Beer has a medium perceived bitterness of 16 from the use of a single premium hop variety. This method of hopping adds to the dry-roasted notes of darker malts and is balanced with the sweeter nutty tastes of the tawny malts.
maybe actually try sending them an e-mail. I know Sierra Nevada answered my questions when asked.

Hi Jazzman, Have a look on the bottle - it will tell you where it was brewed. I know they have changed things around a bit lately.

They use Nz hops which are very distinctive -reminds me of steinlager with big hop taste. I thought it was actually very hoppy for a stout - standard stouts don't have much hop flavour - gives a very minty effect when put with dark malts but still its not a bad beer by a long shot

I agree with the schwarzbier line.

It is roasty and a bit sweet but light in the mouth and clean form PIls malt and i recon a good lager yeast like WLP 830 or 833 for a bit more malt.

monthieths black....... tonys version
