What instrument and size of do you use to unscrew the nipples on the top of the keg. I went through my wrench set and nothing fitting the fitting!

Also I have two of these kegs that leak fairly badly - if you leave the gas off them for a day when you put it back on they are empty and need to refill - needless to say I am going through the gas!! The valve seems to be sticking open just enough to leak all the gas out. DO I need to purchase new nipples (please no jokes  ) or just pull them apart and give them a good clean.

Merc, Have you sprayed the inlet and outlet (nipples) with soapy water? The leak could possibly be from where the post screws into the keg not just from the nipple itself. I just use a small adjustable spanner to remove my posts, after you have pulled them apart you will know if the seals in the nipples need replacing as they will be cracked or torn. Check to see where the leak is coming from first, you might only have to tighten the posts.

Cheers
Andrew

Andrew thanks for your post. I am having trouble getting the post off! I shall get the adjustable out and have an attack again on the post/nipple. I was wondering what size tube spanner would do the job?

I use a "toothed" ring spanner...cann't remember the size though (at work right now).

Just take a keg with you to Supercheap and find one that fits...$5 later you'll be laughing :)

merc are u taking about a cornie keg?
if so you are right seems to be an odd size? but then i thought about it and realized they are yank tanks so the will be imperial not metric !
i use a 17 mm on my posts a bit sloppy on the ring end but the open ended side is fine.

if your not talking about a cornie then disregard this post.

thanks for the inspiring comments from last month been doing as much reading as possable and i am getting the gist of all grain brewing now (but am in no way ready to have ago) .

also you can buy new poppets for them easy as well bit pricey but you need what you need o ring kits a cheap and if you lube with KY Gel thats as good as Keg lube.

Thanks guys. I attatcked with my adjustable spanner and after removing the lid I could get better access and leverage. Needless to say I got the post loosened off after taking some skin off the top of my hand on the rim of the openning to the keg! Replaced the seal and all should be fine. Half a keg down and 8 to go.

WHAT BRAND OF WRENCH DID YOU USE " SCUN KNUCKLE "

i like Kingchrome

Hi Merc, get hold of a 13/16" (21mm) spark plug socket, there's a good chance that will do the trick. Most of my posts fit this, but there are a few 'freaks' in the bunch :D

i use a plumbers tap spanner for the non-star type post. not sure what i'll use for the star ones when they need fixing :(

I use the same piece of kit posted by Redbeard above.
From memory it is a weird size and finding the right size took a few hardware stores.
I can dig up the size tonight easily because I used it yesterday to re-condition my 45 litre part keg.

Beers,
Doc

Thanks Doc and all. Look forward to hearing what size as the posts on my kegs were a weird size and none of my socket set or spanners would fit.

My tube spanner (like in the picture by Redbeard) is 21 mm one end and 23 mm the other.
I also have another which is spark plug size. The combo of both gets all my keg gas and liquid posts out.

Doc

tep its not a new sensation but shes $hithot its the cammed ring spanner 16mm-23mm yep let no post go unturned and for $23 bucks you cant go wrong its the only spanner you will need for all your bar needs .

I use a ring/opened ended spanner, around size 18 or 21, as suggested take keg to supacheap and by ring/opened ended spanner. Works well

17mm - 11/16" Near enough (17.5mm)
21mm - 13/16" Near enough (20.6mm)
22mm - 7/8" Near enough (22.2mm)
23mm - 15/16" Near enough (23.8mm)
Adjustables are a butchers tool, generally the cheaper ones have a lot of jaw slop and round of nuts easily, more expensive ones have tighter workings and even slope inwards so they become parallel as the load comes on.
Basically, you get what you pay for

You could always invest in some Metrinch spanners. Unlike conventional spanners which apply pressure on the 'corners' of a nut, metrinch appy the pressure on the sides.

As such, a little play in the size of the spanner is a good thing. Even better, the one spanner suites both metric and imperial sizings.

I have a set I bought years ago. Have saved me many times when working on older cars etc.

Cheers

Found it!!!!!
