I've been holding off buying a few brewing books to see how far the Aussie dollar went up vis a vis the Greenback.

As an example I bought "Brew Like a Monk" locally and it was A$31.95. On Amazon it is US$10. Of course postage is a big slug on top, but here's what I got this week

Items shipped on September 24, 2007:
Delivery estimate: October 6, 2007 - October 16, 2007
1 package via Standard Intl Shipping

* 1 of: The Complete Joy of Homebrewing Third Edition (Harperresource Book)
Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC US$10.17
* 1 of: Designing Great Beers: The Ultimate Guide to Brewing Classic Beer Styles
Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC US$16.47
* 1 of: How to Brew: Everything You Need To Know To Brew Beer Right The First Time
Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC US$13.57

Total cost, including postage of $US21.96 is US$62.17.

This translated onto my credit card at $A73.23, which I think is a good buy for three cardinal texts on our fave subject, Cheerz Wab.

Good timing with this thread as we are just about to do a "family buy" on Amazon and I got told I'm allowed a brew book (woohoo, but only 1 :D ).

Anyway I have how to brew and was looking at on of the first two you list, what would be a recommendation if I had to choose one?

History: I'm a K&K/Extract brewer dabbling with grains etc, currently acquiring parts to do my first BIAB AG - although this will probably not be for a few months at least.

Cheers.

Nice one, wabster. I grabbed these last month:

"Dave Miller's Homebrewing Guide: Everything You Need to Know to Make Great-Tasting Beer"
David G. Miller; Paperback; $12.71

"Brew Like a Monk: Trappist, Abbey, and Strong Belgian Ales and How to Brew Them"
Stan Hieronymus; Paperback; $12.21

"How to Brew: Everything You Need To Know To Brew Beer Right The First Time"
John J. Palmer; Paperback; $13.57

The order qualified for Free Super Saver Shipping (within US). Had it shipped to a relatives house, who forwarded it on to me for around the same price as your order.

I also picked up Designing Great Beers for free by joining the AHA offer here.

If you can be bothered, check eBay in the States (ebay.com). There are several books on offer- heaps of Papazians New Complete Joy at 1.00 or so, with 3.95 shipping. Around the time I purchased Miller's Homebrewing Guide, I saw one go for $1.95 and $2.95 shipping. Best to check with seller first to confirm shipping to Aus and verify price so you wont get stung, or have it shipped to a US address at the sellers advertised price, and forwarded on as I did with Amazon.

Cheers,

While you're at it, see if your favorite podcast has an amazon link. It won't cost you anything, but the podcaster gets a cut of the transaction which helps them continue to provide their services...

My favs are BAsic Brewing Radio, and The Brewing Network (no affiliations)

Cheers!

I'm probably in the same situation as yourself wambesi. Today I went to Spotlight at Rockdale and bought a big piece of swiss voille to make a BIAB kit out of. Up to this point I have been doing K&K with a few variations. I have both a 55litre esky and a large boiler to use for BIAB, and may try both to see which works the best and/or easier.

I had trouble working out what my choices would be so I got the 3 books I listed, and plan to find a quiet place when they arrive and do some serious reading. Not that I can't do that on AHB and the Net generally, but I CAN curl up in my leather recliner to read a book, if I stay awake hahaa.

Cheerz Wab.
