I had that from pitching 1 stout tin with 12 litres of water onto a Nottingham yeast cake from the previous stout. That happened within 30 minutes! Nottingham is vicious enough at standard pitching rates! I can imagine that pitching onto any yeast cake would give the same result.
 
Care to clarify on infection risk ? i dont see how there would b much chance with an active yeast that hasnt actually broken the plastic barrier.
If this happens on a regular basis for your fermenting process it would be advisable to split your batch use two vessels and ferment in each this will negate any chance of infection and the bonus is you won't lose any of your brew to carry over

I usually only pitch 1 cup of yeastcake, saves a lot of mess.
 
Just to clarify for a noob.....
It sounds like if he used a smaller yeast cake the fermenting would have been less explosive.

I'm also guessing he could have used a little less water and then topped up the water in a few days once it quietened down??
 
Well key is not be that lazy and pitch onto a full yeast cake. Save at least half for another batch. Use and re use correctly and you won't buy yeast for months and months and months and.......
 
No expert either mate. There is enough yeast in 1 cup of yeastcake to ferment many brews. Mine get going within a couple of hours, any more and I would 'overpitch' and probably have mess to clean up. Can't comment on your second question.

Sometimes it's unexpected, especially for brewers not used to how a particular yeast behaves. If it does get to that stage (which it has in this case) - what to do?

Cleanup is pretty easy anyway.

dont you just hate that wasted brew on the floor after carryover dam i do
then that cleaning
 
It's only happened on a few brews and mostly just krausen/yeast that's plentiful in the fermenter. I make up for the waste by top cropping. Cleaning that is a breeze compared to cleaning up after a brewday.

Mop, sponge and spray, 5 mins. New glad wrap, 2 mins.
