Working backwards. Have a 50l keg thats beeen converted to make a fine boiler. Have a gas bottle on my BBQ with a standard regulator for the BBQ. I have an electric urn for boiling water but I don't want to use to boil my wort in it anymore. I have completely ignored all previous debate on burners. Now I want simple answers.

I will need to buy the burner mail order. What do I need to buy ?

What's the best burner ? Who's got them ?

Do I need a different regulator for the gas bottle ?

Just simple answers please (hangover still in session).

For a converted keg a Turkey burner with a HP regulator will be fine.

Cheers

I lurv my 'nasa' (aka 'turkey') burner. Gets 40-odd litres up to boil in about 15-20 minutes. Noisy minutes, but once on the boil you can turn it right down and it's barely audible. Mine cost abou $100 incl. the high-pressure reg.

okay, so will need the high pressure regulator (assuming the rgulator on my BBQ is not HP)

Good to know the NASA is also the TURKEY boiler.

Only other ones I've seen are the Italian Spiral and the Mongolian burner. Assuming all are pretty much as good as the other ?

BeerBelly has a range of burners including the NASA and the Italian Spiral Burner

The NASA has all the grunt you'll need - but it is noisy - it will disturb neighbours at 6am mash-ins

If this is an issue go the spiral burner - but it is a little more expensive

I got my NASA + HP regulator from Globe Imports in Adelaide for $129 delivered - though this was almost 18 months ago - may be worth a call

Cheers

I can't comment much on other styles of burner, except to say that it always seems to me they take much longer to get a boil going than my Nasa does. But plenty of guys use them, so they must have something going for them.

I have both the turkey burner (nasa) and the Italian burner.
The Italian burner is awesome! and scary  and for my flat based pot works brilliantly because the spread of flame is quite broad and even.
A 50L keg would probably have a much narrower base and more suited to the concentrated flame on the Turkey burner IMHO

Contact Beerbelly and he will definitely be able to help you.

Thanks BB - that snippet of info is gold. NASA sounds the go.

Yep, NASA burners are cost/size/heat efficient - the best all-round comprimise IMO. Shipping a 3-ring would probably cost as much as the burner!

And yes, your BBQ reg will be LOW pressure. The reg I use with my NASA is 10psi (bought frm the US) - but any medium/high or adjustable reg would probably do. A lot of guys swear by the adjustable ones.

Haven't used a NASA but realy happy with my Rambo burner with a high pressure reg. Keg boilers sit on there perfect.

Just to confuse you :p

Kabooby :)

FGZ,

the nasa gets a good rap as does the italian. I use a dual ring HP burner from Gameco & am very happy with it. Gameco are on Parramatta Rd at Silverwater. Give them a call & i'm sure they'll help

I havent used anything other than the turkey aka nasa burner, so cant give any comparative info other than its more than adequate for a 50lt converted kettle setup.

But as far as regulators go you will want an Adjustable HP reg, not a fixed LP or HP reg.

Also atleast with the burner i got through grain & grape, comes with a perfectly fitting stand to suit converted kettles.

I assume you'll be at the Big Ray Day. I'll be bringing my Nasa along to do a brew on the day, so you can see it in action. If Scott H. and Cortez bring theirs too we can have a simulated Space Shuttle launch.

I have a Rambo burner. I bought it from Gameco in Sydney, ~$130 including hose and reg. It will bring a 50L batch from 78C sparge temp to the boil in about 15 mins. Uses about 1kg/hr of gas on full flame.

Rambo - That's the other burner. Mashmaster's Rambo and Grape & Grain's NASA are pretty much the same price so I guess the main decider is what the keg sits best on. My keg has a 36cm diameter - its not a Tooheys or Carlton type but I'm guessing that's pretty standard ?

Might wait a week (hard cos I got a couple bags hop flowers dying to be used) and make up my mind then.

I assume you'll be at the Big Ray Day

You betcha I'm there ! :super:

My 3 ring rambo burner and low pressure regulator (standard BBQ) only just gets 30L~ to a rolling boil in a 40L pot , have the lid 1/4-1/2 on and it boils quite vigorously. plan on upgrading to a med/high pressure regulator but i am unsure how safe this is as the rambo's are only rated for a low pressure reg.

Cheers!

My Rambo came with a medium pressure Reg, I've had no problem with it. It would boil 30L over the side of a 40L pot. Once I hit the boil, I can throttle it back about two thirds and still maintain a good rolling boil on 50L

Same here Schooey. Mine came with the reg and steel braided hose. Got it from Gameco and am more than happy with it.

The Rambo also comes with a self ingniting switch. Just turm it on and it lights itself. Not sure if the NASA has this.

Kabooby :)
