I'm thinking of a simple "Aussie Ale" for upcoming events. I need to know from those who have used Galaxy hops whether its best to
1. Use POR at 60min to add bitterness
2. Then add Galaxy at flameout and whirlpool. With the whirlpool time then no chill, I will get a fair bit of bitterness from the Galaxy but more importantly the Galaxy flavour everyone raves about.

Don't want to do an all galaxy hop brew yet - next time.

Those of you who have used Galaxy .. does this make sense ?

Seems reasonable to me... that said though I have only done an all Galaxy brew, which I was extremely happy with. I was pretty cautious with the additions due to the high AA%, but was very happy with the result.

Can't see any problem though with using POR for bittering and then 2 additions of Galaxy as you are suggesting.

Yes it does....

Galaxy is also a great bittering hop but can be harsh.

Check this recipe out, did not last long in the keg.

Galaxy is a lovely hop! Also done a all galaxy brew, but I prefer it with something else. But probably used incorrectly.

With the all Galaxy, what were your hop additions ?

I don't want this too heavy, but I've not used a high AA% hop like Galaxy before. I really was looking at small amounts - 10g in a 20l wort. Will I get enough flavour from the Galaxy at this rate ?

EDIT - just saw your recipe KT, whilst not looking at an IPA I can see me doing something along the same lines. Saw your note on the DrSmurto recipe .. will run something up and brew over the weekend. Much thanks.

We used 13g... and still got that yummy citrus/passionfruit (changes) yum!

I think it works perfectly with POR. We are still working on the reciepe.

FGZ - as it was the first time I used this hop, I was pretty cautious.

For a 23l batch, I went

10g @ 60, 30, 10, 0. This was chilled... not no-chill.

Bitterness was pretty smooth with this approach - about 33ibu's, so not over the top, but with plenty of flavour and aroma - yum. Did pretty well in a comp as well, scoring 36/50 on average.

Next time I would split the difference and just go 60/20/0, for no chill, would probably take your approach or else use the french press method and add one into fermentation.

I have some more Galaxy in the freezer and another brew is def on the cards.

Incidentally, have also dried this hop in a randall a few times at two different places - that fresh hop taste certainly packs a punch!!

FG, I did an aussie ale that took out BoS at the Ipswich Show. 30G PoR for 60 min then 7G Galaxy at flame out. Be warned, Galaxy has bucket loads of flavour. You don't need much.

cheers

Thanks BD .. I'm glad what I was thinking was on track. That's along the lines I've got in Beersmith. Want to get this style of brew down pat .. simple malt profile, let the hop flavour come through. It just kept nagging at me (plus I only have a small bag of galaxy !) that Galaxy looks more the end hop despite its high alphas. Heard only grapevine sayings that Galaxy was a harsh bitterer if overused, so thought I'd use it at the end until I feel happy to progress. Besides, I have plenty of POR to use as the bittering hop also.

Kegged this one 2 days ago for our club comp next week - Tasting lovely :)

Stick with your plan FGZ. I've got an all Galaxy Wheat Lager which has been kicking around the bar for a few months. I don't mind it but it's getting very mixed reviews from most that give it a go. Certainly some fans in this thread but just as many comme si comme sa's amongst those that have tried mine.

Cheers,
