Having had to accept warm (OK it was 37C) Tsing Tao at several restaurants and hotels, this hit home. Good to see the authorities cracking down.

Still hate warm Chinese beer though......

Wes,

You've got to ask for bing da pi jiu (icy cold beer) if you don't want it at room temp. Our local restaurants learnt to keep some in the "bingerator" for us.

Cheers, Andrew.

Hi Andrew,

Your absolutely correct - always ask for Bing Pijui. Problem is very few restaurants have the chiller capacity to hold any cold ones. They did find an ice bucket for us on occasions though. The worst was the lounge at Shanghai PuDong airport - only Tsing Tao and Bud - and both warm. The rear door of the chiller cabinet was wide open and the attendant could not understand why we wanted it closed! As a matter of course we always ask to see the range of beers available when entering a restaurant and carfully check out the original gravities and ABV. Always reject the stuff starting at 7P (1028 OG) and try and find something with flavour. Golden Tsing Dao is OK (11.4P and 4.3% ABV), Heinekin OK (same OG and %) and occasionaly you will find a "special" from some of the local breweries. Otherwise the beer is pretty bland and weak - which is probably just as well given the local prediliction for "Gambay"
