Had a very bad n00b moment yesterday putting down my 2nd brew to date - a Coopers stout. Didn't put half the airlock in the rubber grommet int he lid of the fermenter FIRST and tried when the lid was on and of course pushed the gromet through and into the brew !! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!

To my surprise the rubber grommet sunk like a stone to the bottom. Followed a failed effort with extra long tongs it had to be hand-picked fromt he bottom and reinstalled and the airlock setup.

Whats the verdict ? Will by arm-greebies kill the brew or might it survive ?

won't be doing that again !! <_<

did you clean and sanitise your arms, tongs & gromet first?

Who knows !! should have left it in there, if sanitised !!

Cheers

Yeah, not a good idea! Next time it happens just leave the grommet in there, unless you can get it with sanitised tongs. I wouldn't even used a sanitised arm, you could have some crap under your nails, lose a few skin flakes or arm hair in there.

Only thing you can do now is wait a few days, take a sample and give it the smell and taste test! You'll know the smell and/or taste of an infection.

I have done the same thing and left the grommet in there until the beer was kegged.

Just need to keep a spare grommet on hand

If the grommet was sanitised and it fell in then it shouldn't be a problem.

As for arms and tongs not sure - even if sanitised.

If it turns out okay watch your friends faces as you tell them why you named it Arm-Greebies Stout!

Yep, I've accidently left a grommet in the barrel before.
Poured everything in, looked around for the grommet and airlock and couldn't find the grommet.

Cursed for a while, hunted everywhere and finally gave up and put a newy on.

It wasn't until I kegged the beer and cleaned out the ferm that I found the grommet :)

I've also done the exact same thing with the 'o' ring on a keg. Couldn't find it anywhere but eventually found it when the keg was finished and cleaned out

In both cases the rubber did nothing to the flavour of the beer.

ta for the info. will let you guys know if it's drinakable (or indeed arm flavoured :) ).

The 1st batch of Brigalow lager came out great even with crazy temperature fluctuations 3 weeks after bottling !
