Effort and knowledge to result and look at me! ratio is a bit out of whack.

I'm guessing that the article's author Matthew Dunn got an early Xmas present for himself in a nicely timed promotional piece. He'll play around a bit more over the Xmas break, then do up a few batches for New Years, "Hey guys look what I made", then the whole thing will sit in the cupboard.
