Hi Fellas,
I am looking at expanding my brewing horisons by making a Duvel clone for the QLD Brewerhood get together in March. The recipe calls for either WLP 570 or Wyeast 1388. Would T-58 be an acceptable alternative to these two yeasts or should I go with what they recommend?

cheers

That's bizarre, i was about to PM Tony and ask almost the same question. He recently brewed a pale belgian ale with the T-58. I reckon it'd come out pretty good in the Duvel style. Depends how much smell you're hoping to coax out of it.

How's it drinking Tony? Thumbs up for T-58?

I can only comment on T-58 I used in a dark strong ale; produced very spicy dark fruit esters, a bit peppery maybe, and a bit of peach.

Not sure how it would work as a Duvel clone, I've only tried it once, a year or so ago when I was smashed. What a waste!

it's got a spicy pepperyness so it'd go with the strong alcohol flavours of Duvel

I used the 1388 yeast last year on a run of three beers and was very happy with the results. I used T-58 in a wit I'm drinking ATM. It doesn't seem to have nearly as much yeast character as the 1388 did, although it's hard to compare since they're different styles/recipes/etc. Personally, I doubt I'll use that yeast again.

I'd say give the T-58 a go if you have some, but if you haven't got any yeast yet, definitely go the 1388/570. :chug:

i used wlp 550 in my duval clone from grumpies

Thanks for the feedback Fellas,
Just had a quick look at Mashmasters site to see what yeast he stocks and it looks like I'll order some 570.

cheers

Currently reading 'Brew like a monk', and it claims both 1388 and 570 yeasts are sourced from Duvel.

Jaffa.

The t58 would work OK but won't give you quite what you'd get from a good liquid. Fermented at a warmer temp, 24-28, I think it provides some good flavours for belgians though if you can't get your hands on liquid come brew day.
