I have a an old rose bush in my front yard and I need to take a cutting from it and propagate it.

The Rose was from the wedding flowers for the parents of my landlord. The rose itself is just about on its lasts legs and I want to get a cutting to start fresh, and give my landlord one to. The plant is approx 60yrs old.

When would be the best time and whats the best method. There are still some good bits of green stem and bud wood left.

It doesn't just need a good prune ?

My dad has the roses growing that his father grew, so they must last a good while.

Yep, rooting hormone is the ticket. Propagated some lavender to plant amongst the fruit trees out the back to get the bees a little more interested. Also had success with Rosemary.
Cut a healthy bit off at an angle, wet it, dip it in the rooting hormone, poke it into a little pot of good potting mix, water and wait.
Took about a month in the case of my lavender to develop roots from the cutting. Now its rooted in the ground.
Yep, well and truly taken root. After being dipped in the rooting hormone.
Rooting.
Hormone.
