So anyone else into 4wd'ing?

Shortly buying a ML triton dually and going to get into it. Did some ( i should say i was in the vehicle when some was done) 20 odd years ago...

Any tips for a newby?

Or anyone interested in a fraser or cape trip next year?

Recently went to Bamaga in northern queensland and had a toyota prado hire car. Not bad for a 4wd but there's loads of great 4wd tracks up there. About a 45 minute drive from Bamaga to get to the tip of the cape. Great in the wet season if you want some muddy roads to get bogged in, but also great in the dry for other parts.

Well I would be, but my diesel turbo pajero decided to put a hole in a piston a few weeks ago and I'm still shell-shocked from the prices I've had to fix/replace the engine. $700 just for a set of pistons, let alone the rest of the stuff that would need to be done at the same time to make it worth it. $4000 for a recon, Cheapest second hand engine = $1700 that I don't have....... Hence it sits in the driveway gathering cobwebs and birdshit.... :(

that sounds quite reasonable, I live in fear that my Jackaroo ***** itself, everything for it is $$$, A recon engine for it would be in the $10k mark. A clutch is about $2k

BTW, it is no coincidence that 4x4 with the shift key down is $X$.

Which model do you have, glenos?

I have the 4JB1T 3.0TDI (2001). Holden did a recall of this motor and replaced the injector seals. All-in-all, a nice 4WD...

Sorry for the hijack, fixa. To get back on topic, there is a wealth of info on the internet about off-roading, but my suggestion would be to undertake some form of driving course (assuming you have little experience) or join a club, before doing anything too adventurous.

Not only will you sometimes have to extract yourself from the 'nure, you may be called upon to assist others in need. I like the whole "getting-away-from-it-all" thing about 4WD, but I know from experience it pays to prepare well.

I have the 4jx1 engine, 3.0TD used in Jackaroos, I have had the recalls done and it goes great, I just don't want it to break. Recalls were injector seals and then the injectors.

The 4jb1 is from the rodeo I believe.

the link I posted above has a dedicated section for Isuzus (Trooper/Jackaroo and Rodeo mostly), also has sections for Hyundai Terracan and Toyota Prado. Best thing is we don't get the cruiser vs patrol dick measuring contest that you see on other 4wd forums.

Down here in Tas you can do a course through adult ed for $120, it is run by one fo the local clubs and backed by advanced motorists institute. One day in the classroom and the next in the paddock, this gives you the skills you will need for most of the situations you will find, ie How to Snatch, whinch, what you and your truck can actually get over/through.

Good to see you brewing Glenos. You've helped me (as Hopalong) and my TD auto a couple of times on that forum. If you are as dinkum about brewing as you are with the Jack then your beer would truly be worth bottling.

I stand corrected, glenos.

Mine is the 4JX1 engine, most definitely a Jackaroo. I got the other model number off the net somewhere and it sounded right (also partly because I once owned a Rodeo). My Jack is garaged at the moment.

Can't wait to get it on to Bluff Creek again... :)

Hi Fixa

I agree with Whistlingjack If you haven't been 4WD before or have little experience its a good Idea to join a club and do a driving course, most of the good ones will run one. Ive got a hilux dually and its great fun to get out to new places. Ive been to Fraser 3 times and its an awesome place. Its a little crowded than it use to be, But a must see place. Lots great places to camp.

I must head up there again soon!!!!!
