    sweet thanks guys. with respect to my innability to boil on the stove, i think it is a combination of having a crappy stock pot with a base that is concave and so doesnt touch the hot plate as well as i'd like, and also the hot plate turns itself off when it gets too hot, as some sort of safety...

    AFAIK if you are going to drop hop into primary you are best to do it after the main activity of the ferment is over as this process removes some of the hop aroma, so i would suggest dry hopping around day 3 or 4 (?)

    got any pictures? no matter how much you clean the fermenter, the nasties can still get in when you are putting the goop and other bits in and can take hold. Im assuming you didnt add any additional hops that could be showing up as floaties?
