FS VIC: Complete Grainfather setup + extras

Selling my grain father setup - pretty much everything you need to brew apart from ingredients! $1,000 for the lot as described here. Here's what you get: - Original Grainfather (Gen 1) homebrew system. Works perfectly, only ended up using it a few times before a move and other demands have...

Dedicated Grainfather Guide, Problems and Solutions Thread

Thanks Max and Hezzer, maybe I was over-thinking it. I figured if the glycol unit could be hooked up to the CF chiller it would have been done before. Still considering one to control a fermenter down the track, so good to know how it works. Appreciate the link Max, a drum with ice and...

Dedicated Grainfather Guide, Problems and Solutions Thread

Hi all, I'm getting back into brewing after a house move and a few year's hiatus. Lots of posts to catch up on and things to re-learn. Anyway, I'm on tank water now, so looking to be water-wise about how I brew (although nice pure water to start things off with!). The biggest waste I had was...

Additional yeast a week after first pitching?

That's how long it's been since I brewed..I didn't think of that . Beer has dropped a little, cider not noticeably. So just slow. Might chuck more yeast in when it arrives just to get it moving towards FG. Guess it can't hurt?

Additional yeast a week after first pitching?

Hi, Getting back into brewing after a long hiatus. Just put together a couple of kits - AHB's Sticks and Stones Specific Ale and Country Brewer's Passionfruit cider (don't judge, the wife likes it). Both kits were recent purposes, and yeast pitched when they were 25 degrees. Been in the...

    Splitting rhizomes

Hi, New to growing hops, and getting back into brewing after an enforced hiatus due to a house move. I've got a bit more land now, so keen to get a decent hop plantation going. One question I have is how much growth is typical of rhizomes each year? I see the sales and trades on here, and...

You can order the upgrades direct from the GF store in Australia, or any of the LHBS who sell the GF should be able to get it. I got the free upgrade kit, mainly for the overflow pipe insert as it's easier to keep track of than the little cap. New pipe connectors are better too, my original...

Pitched too hot - ruined or salvageable?

Mine should be ready to bottle this weekend, and seems to smell/taste OK now. Ale yeast should be OK pitching at 30-35 deg (ones I've used have said so) but if the other packet you have is the same type you may want to pitch it so the initial lot isn't stressed. I did this (once it was down...

Pitched too hot - ruined or salvageable?

Hi, Thanks all for the advice (and encouragement to keep it going). I got it down to 19-20 degrees overnight (did have the fridge off for a few hours as it's old and was working hard initially, but cool in fridge and back on in the morning. Steady at around 19 degrees now. I had another West...

Pitched too hot - ruined or salvageable?

Thanks Yob. Just checked, an hour or so later and it's still at 30 degrees, and the fridge is working flat out trying to cool it down. Hopefully down another 10 degrees in the next hour and then it will settle down. I can leave it a couple of weeks so will see how it goes.

Pitched too hot - ruined or salvageable?

Decided to do a brew this afternoon, and despite the heat all went well. NZ Pale Ale (Chur kit for the Grainfather), using American West Coast yeast.Yeast was hydrating at 30-35 degrees as per the packet instructions. All went well during the day, but long story short something went wrong...

Looking for a few beers to showcase different hops

Thanks Blind Dog, hadn't thought of that. I was going to pick up some hop cones from Grain n Grape anyway, so would be good to have a plain (boring) base beer, and then add different hops to them.

Looking for a few beers to showcase different hops

Thanks all, much appreciated. I'll pick up a few to sample myself and select a couple of distinct ones to take along to the talk.

Looking for a few beers to showcase different hops

Hi, Hope this is OK to ask here... I have been asked to do a talk for a local gardening group on growing hops (including history and uses for beer and tea). I have some plants to show and will bring along some cones, and plan to make a hop tea. However, my interest is in using them in beer...

Fermenting a couple of beers at once - getting the temp right

Hi, Thanks all for the replies and experiences. Looks like the consensus is it's doable, with some experimenting and thought about where to take the temp reading from and maybe adjust it down a bit - and ensuring the styles are complimentary. Will give it a go - worst case scenario is a...

Fermenting a couple of beers at once - getting the temp right

Hi, I currently use an old fridge to ferment in, and it has space for two fermenters. Usually with one going I mount the temperature probe on the side of the fermenter, covered by a piece of foam. So I seem to get a pretty accurate reading for the temp controller off the vessel. However, I...

    Good magazine subscription

Another option is to join Melbourne Brewers (which I did recently) - $55 for the year, they meet in Ferntree Gully so not far from you, and membership comes with a subscription to BYO (issues can be picked up at club meetings). Chwck out melbournebrewers.org Either way you get a great...

    Good magazine subscription

All the BYO's I have - the last 2 years - have metric conversions in all their recipes, both kg's and degrees C. So no issue with converting. Maybe the older issues didn't have this? BYO is definitely worth having, never found an issue where there hasn't been a few relevant articles. Just...
