Tropical Pale Ale : Six String Brewing

Hi Luxo. Reviving an old thread, but wondered how this turned out? I've just done a tropical but it seems a bit too malty for the low IBUs so I think I may have over-complicated the grain bill. I also dry hopped more like 3g/L but I quite like that in my tropicals and hazys. Keen to give this...

Do you measure OG before or after adding a yeast starter?

Thanks gents, that makes sense. Definitely crashing and decanting the starter next time :)

Do you measure OG before or after adding a yeast starter?

Hi all Ok so I've done a fair bit of searching and found a few threads on decanting the starter before pitching. It seemed that was mainly to not mess up the volumes but I'll definitely do that next time. But yesterday I pitched 2L of starter (two step) into my Belgian strong ale. I measured the...

    Protein levels in spent grain?

Thanks MHB, that's interesting and very helpful. Looks like most likely the grains I'm giving them won't have the required levels of protein for laying hens. But they're looking at getting lambs and pigs too, and I know pigs love spent grains. You're right, if I were to chuck in the hot break...

    Protein levels in spent grain?

Hi all I have been giving my spent grains to my parents to feed the chooks with. They love it, but they were asking if I knew what the protein level is in it, because apparently to keep chooks on the lay their main feed needs to be around 16% protein. The interweb tell me that barley only starts...

Wort cloudy after whirlpool hop addition- BIAB

What a pretty fermenter! Jealous :) Thanks for that, I'll try that next time, just whirlpooling straight off and sprinkling the hops in once temp is right. I always allow a couple of L of trub but last night I definitely had to leave more than usual. Ah well live and learn.

Wort cloudy after whirlpool hop addition- BIAB

Yeah, i had the lid on while it cooled from boiling to 90c. That was when it cleared up. The issue was, when I put my hops in and whirplooled it, it mixed it all up again and during the next 20 minutes of hop time, it didn't clear up again. Maybe I don't need to stir it once I add my hops? Maybe...

Wort cloudy after whirlpool hop addition- BIAB

Hi all I have done many BIAB no chill brews and have been pretty happy with my usual wort clarity after a good whirlpool. However I did a brew tonight that used whirlpool hops and my BeerSmith calcs were based on a 90degC whirlpool. So I put my whirlfloc in with 10 min of boil to go as usual...

Viennese Mocha Stout- Spice beer recipe help

At first I thought it was a bit sweet and the only change would be to try and get the final gravity lower with healthier yeast. But I did make a starter, so I'm not sure how I'd achieve that anyway. But it's grown on me anyway. I think it's pretty balanced and everyone who's tried it loves it...

Viennese Mocha Stout- Spice beer recipe help

Well, it worked out really well. At the end of fermentation it was a bit higher than I had hoped, probably more like 1.018 (aiming for 1.016), but the extra sweetness isn't a problem. Flavours are great, balance seems good to me. I keg conditioned it for a month at room temp, and ended up...

Making soda water with my keg setup- sodastream sort of thing

Perfect! Thanks mate, that's exactly what I'm after. Thanks hooper80, I thought of that too but only have space for 2 kegs so don't want to take up one with soda :)

Making soda water with my keg setup- sodastream sort of thing

Hi all Sorry if this has been covered. I did a good search and could only find one brief thread on it here https://aussiehomebrewer.com/threads/gas-bottle-to-sodastream.6082/ Plenty of threads about using Sodastream bottles to gas a keg system, but I want to go the other way. So, I'm keen to...

Viennese Mocha Stout- Spice beer recipe help

Thanks pnorkle. I got the first page of the recipe on that link but couldn't see the recipe itself as it was only a sample of the book. All good though, I think I got pretty close and time will tell how it goes.

Viennese Mocha Stout- Spice beer recipe help

Finally got around to brewing this on Wednesday. All seemed to go well other than a small grain spillage from my BIAB bag. It just meant there were a few little grains floating around during the boil that I couldn't get rid of, but I don't think it should be enough to make a difference. Looks...

Spilt a few grains in my BIAB urn- is this a problem

Cheers. I did try scooping a few grains but when I cleaned up thismorning there were very few grains on the bottom anyway, so I think it'll be fine.

Spilt a few grains in my BIAB urn- is this a problem

I'm doing a spiced chocolate/coffee stout so it's going to be pretty rich and heavy. The bag slipped off the rim of the urn and a few grains came out. Is this going to be a problem if there's say 20-50g of grains floating around during the boil? Astringency? Anything like that?

Viennese Mocha Stout- Spice beer recipe help

Thanks gents. Yeah I’m going to leave the coffee till even later I think. I am in town supply so will look into water stats, but I also hav an under sink filter so that will change chlorides etc.
