Leftover Pale - advice on hops

you seem to be on a good track. I was going to say save the Hallertau as it is lower AA and the strong later addition hops you are using for an APA would mean you probably couldn't tell too much what you bittered with, save it for something more subtle or an all noble beer, etc. Citra is...

Classic Bitter - recipe ideas for round 2

I'm no bitter expert, but a lot of people prefer fuggles for bittering and EKG for late flavour and aroma. If you are using a hopped malt extract and only one late hop, I'd go with EKG as well for my tastes.

Opening the Fermenter to Dry Hop

Yes, highly recommend putting that idea on a shelf :) After the 5-10 days before dry hopping, they would be practically useless having been kept at fermentation temps instead of 0C. For anyone who finds this thread, the answers are above and in many other more informative dry hopping threads...

    Vegetarian Gel-it-in Queens

On the original topic el carter, I asked about the gel it in a little while ago. It actually contains a few other additives, including corn sugar I think, so the very swift conclusion was just: why bother? I've got a pack lying around at home and will post if I ever try it, though I bought it...

    Straining/bottling all grain

Hi storeboughtcheeseburgers, I often put close to everything from the boil into my fermentor, but try to leave behind some trub if I can. Other people will be much more selective and would be better at whirl pooling than I. Using a strainer at this point is OK and some people like the fact...

    First AG hiccups...

I believe having a good few beers during brewing is part of the fun! It will get easier, I get the feeling too many people are aiming to get 95% efficiency on their first AG... Great work on decocting on your first go, I think that is pretty awesome, I just wished you had a 6 pack that day as...

Golden Ale - Coopers Recipe of the Month

You want to aim for 1030-1050, ideally 1040 but no need to be perfect. As the gravity goes up from there, you get less out of the hops. It depends on a lot of thislngs but as a very rough example you might need 150% of the hops to achieve the same results if you boiled in 1060 wort instead of...

    First full AG help please

Yep trial and error and relax - it's easy and fun. For a first run on a new system, I would have gone with a bigger grain bill in case you miss sugars somewhere - I think I was off by about 8 gravity points on my first run :)

    Citra Lager

What was your expected IBU? Doesn't seem like enough hops given your late schedule. I made a citra Amarillo PA and I did think passion pop and fruit juice, although it should be close to 60 IBU so it is more the aroma and there is still the bitterness there which I think was a bit much for some...

First stovetop BIAB AG, thoughts and advice on Steinlager Pure clone p

I just went to a brewpub that mainly made lagers, had 5 offerings: pils, Vienna, dark, weiz and a Kolsch and I'd have to say it was a struggle to get through the midi sized samples of all of them! I kept wishing for some of my own beer, which never ever happens at a brew pub hah and then had to...

    New recipe please critique

Yeah I think the changes to hop schedule are good, although I like large flameout additions more than dry hopping. I was going to say that you should switch that large amount of cascade out, tbh I like citra and centennial much more but some cascade at the 15-30 min mark with those would be...

First stovetop BIAB AG, thoughts and advice on Steinlager Pure clone p

I don't drink steinlager much but from a practical POV are you sure you want to a)make a lager first and b) take up fermenter/fridge space so long on your first brew? Just from my experience I am always kicking myself when I make a beer that has to be lagered, although I only have a ferm...

Golden Ale - Coopers Recipe of the Month

Hey nizmoose 500g of crystals going to give you a pretty sweet beer mate. Typically want to keep it to around 250-300 but give it a try and tweak it for your tastes if you like. Also you guys are basically making a kit version of Dr smurtos golden ale, maybe look that up, it is the most made...

    First Brew :-)

yep give them time and if possible, chill them down to settle out the trub even more once you ferment has finished.

    Humor me, just an observation

I run off usually a shot or two of beer first which may have trub/ yeast when bottling and also don't go too crazy getting the last bottle out, as it can be a bit yeasty - not as bad though when bulk priming. I still feel bad for a mate who came over and accidentally got 2 of my duds! One was...

    Guinness Draught BIAB

Thanks Bribie, I've never searched for Guinness clones but I am completely surprised about the fermentation you've described. It seems very counter-intuitive! For bottlers, has there ever been a method of getting that creamy head without a nitrogen tap?!

    Porter Recipe advice

I've used both hops but not to any expert level. That said from looking at pitting together porter and English ale recipes it seems most people prefer fuggles for early bittering and EKG for early to late additions. Fuggles can be pretty earthy, which is why, I aassume, but I'll let the experts...

    Bottling in 3 lots

Very interesting, do you just do kits and bits or AG? I want to have a few good recipes around that low abv mark- how does the taste compare to fermenting a full batch of a similar recipe at 5% or 3.5% ? I imagine watering it down might lose body/ hop flavour & aroma possibly in a different to...

    Too long fermentation ?

I think 3-4 weeks is standard, especially if fermented at colder temps. As for the gent concerned about bottle bombs, definitely grab a hydrometer or refractometer mate!
