PS Hop varieties available are: US Cascade Spalter US Golding Northern Brewer Willamette These are the only varieties worth while importing, Ellerslie is best for other varieties AFAIK I'm basically looking to split cost on some US Cascade and some Spalter Cheers :icon_cheers:

+1 for crash chilling (when bottling) my first weizen had way too much yeast in each bottle to fully rouse before pouring into a glass. A couple of days crash chilling helps to lower the amount of yeast going into the bottle, remembering some extra will be made during carbonation. Now I can get...

Ooh this sounds fun! Going by the samples given to me recently I would be keen to try some more of peoples best brews! Who ever gave me the steam beer; very nice! The Bo Pils was great too and the stout... Still have a couple others left to sample. Cheers! :chug:

You could put a valve in at the low point of you system and pour out the remainder into a jug and tip it into the kettle for the boil... That is what I plan to do; collect all the precious wort I can. That is why my HERMS has a single coil with exit at the bottom so the whole system can gravity...

I recall jamil zainasheff talking about sugar in one of his podcasts... He was of the impression that nasty bugs couldn't live in sugar rich environments... So boiling the sugar might not entirely be necessary. How many K&K folk get away without boiling the sugar and don't get an infection...

I've had some sulphur in the early stages of ferment but it dissipates with time in the fermenter. The last one I brewed had a 1L starter pitched at 12*C then fermented at 18*C... Turned out nice, although the banana is quite subtle so I'm not sure if a higher temp would have helped pronounce it...

Maybe you could do two sparging steps to better wash out the sugars from the grain... I'm interested to hear how it goes so I can avoid making the same mistakes when I [eventually] get my HERMS rig running Cheers

Last year I let my 7 new rhizomes go wild and regularly watered and fed them. I think I got 5 hops in total from them, though they were first year plants. This year I plan to trim back all but 4 shoots on each plant to get strong growth on those rather than a heap of spindly bines like last...

What was your final volume? 4.9kg of grains should be good for 1.050 at around 23 litres... edit: did you over sparge? Cheers
