A Guide to "Extract with Specialty Grain" Brewing

Fair enough. The numbered points though, apart from boiling the extract and using a sock for the grain are pretty much how I do it. To me following this method produces better beer than using a kit base,

    2nd Brew (2nd time around!)

You'll find the Coopers Pale Ale a huge step up on the OS Lager kit. I brewed both at the start with the 1kg of BE1, the Pale Ale was head and shoulders above the Lager. Having said that doing what others have suggested and using 1kg of Malt, some speciality grain and a short hop boil should...

    Help with a Porter recipe

I have done a great kits and bits Porter using the Coopers English Bitter can & 1kg LDM. Steeped 300g of Choc Malt (600EBC), 250g of Crystal (120EBC) and 100g of Malted Barley (120EBC). I've done it twice once with 250g Dark Brown Sugar and 14g S04 and the other 250g Demerara Sugar and Wyeast...

    What are you listening to

Don't get me wrong I watch the shows like Idol, the Voice and AGT, every now and then someone special comes on mind you they don't last long. This young bloke here, probably wouldn't go far on an Aussie talent show, but I reckon he's worth listening to.

    Glass bottles

This fact shouldn't be overlooked, however it depends on how versed you are when you start out. Sure I know some people that have been brewing for 10 years that still get gushers, they have never done it the right way and are not open to instruction. I've never had an overcarbed bottle, I...

    Pale Ale Recipe

Hey Boganboy I reckon the Coopers APA kit is one that you can't go wrong with. I've made many fine Pale Ales with it and also attempted a LCPA. I couldn't get my hands on Galaxy so I used Citra, turned out very close so given your results I guess Cascade dominates in the LCPA. Mine 1.7 kg...

    Coopers Celebration Ale Kit

I put one of these down in November with a few tweaks. I gave 25g of Centennial a short boil (12 mins) in 5 litres after steeping 250g of Pale Crystal. Pitched Coopers commercial yeast re-cultured from 3 Pale Ale long necks. Dry hop as per recipe, 25g each of Nelson and Centennial, on day 5...

What to do with Canadian blonde?

Het Cavey How about 500g of LDM and 500g of honey. I put one down last week using Heritage Clover Honey and a 5th generation Wyeast 1056. I didn't mind the Canadian with BE1, it was actually better than when I did it with Cascade and LDM

And thanks for doing that Ian. It is legendary and obviously has gone viral among kit & extract brewers and will continue to do so. See here

    Yeast Rinsing (so4)

I am in the process of rinsing some yeast from an English Bitter OG 1.038 (FG 1.008). The middle layer is darker than the bottom layer, for some reason I was expecting the yeast layer to be the lighter coloured layer. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Cheers

    Pale Ale Brew

Hey Mickos Have to agree with JimmyTheHuman. My best brew so far has been a Mid Strength based on the Coopers APA kit. Recipe Coopers APA Wheat Dry Malt 700g 20g Citra @ 7 mins 25g Amarillo @ 5 mins US05 7g OG = 1.030 FG = 1.003 I based this on a recipe from TonyW on the Coopers Forum, I call...
