    Boiling Grain For Flavour

Firstly, as an extract brewer extracting sugars from speciality grain is EXACTLY what you are doing. Just to clear things up. When we talk about speciality grains we are talking about crystal or 'cara' grains. These grains have gone through a special mild kilning that actually mashes them while...

Malt Extract Vs Dme Vs Dextrose

Speciality (steeping) grains, or maltose. Maltose is almost completely unfermentable so it adds a thicker mouthfeel and it's not particularly sweet (compared to other sugars). Steeping grains (like crystal malt) also add a richer malty flavour and some unfermentable sugars that contribute to...

My Single Vessel Biab Electric Build

UPDATE: Did my first brew last weekend and everything went beautifully! That means that these cheap elements http://www.stoveconnection.com.au/shop/ind...s/kz24hq00.html can be bent by hand and perform well! I didn't get any hotspots or shorting. The 2400W was a bit too weak to give me a...

My Single Vessel Biab Electric Build

In that case should I disassemble the fittings from the pot whenever it's not being used? or should the teflon tape take care of the contact problem?

My Single Vessel Biab Electric Build

Thanks for the info! Yeah the bolts were sitting in contact with the pot for a few days and moisture must have pooled around them via capillary action. If I have some cash lying around I might get some food grade silicone and make some feet for the bolts (I've had experience with silicone mold...

My Single Vessel Biab Electric Build

But won't the galvanic reaction still happen when there is liquid in the pot making the connection?

My Single Vessel Biab Electric Build

The only reason is to reduce it's length so it fits in the pot. Straight it's 44cm long with the bend I was able to pull it inside 37cm (about a 39cm diameter in the pot) Also, regarding surface area, bending something of a certain length doesn't add any more surface area.

My Single Vessel Biab Electric Build

I bent it like that. This is the element http://www.stoveconnection.com.au/shop/ind...s/kz24hq00.html It was really easy to bend. I want thinking i'd need to make a jig, but I just carefully bent it by hand. If it works and works well.. I'll have found the holy grail of cheap elements for...

My Single Vessel Biab Electric Build

Ok first glitch hit! Advice appreciated! So I had the false bottom sitting in there for a few days and there were some droplets of water leftover from when I did the leak test. The bolts holding it up are stainless steel and were obviously in contact with the aluminium pot. Is the below going...

My Single Vessel Biab Electric Build

Yeah I thought of the compression fitting, but wanted a neater connection. And i've seen the thermometers with built in NPT fittings, I just didn't want to spend $50 on the thermometer (mine cost $9)

I tried the BSP sizes and they were all either way too big or way too small. The 1/4 NPT seemed to be the closest fit.

My Single Vessel Biab Electric Build

UPDATE TIME! As I said, it's certainly a lesson in patience putting this thing together, I've been designing, researching, gathering parts and assembling for over a month! Here are the latest developments to the set up. After some filing to enlarge the element hole I was able to get it...

My Single Vessel Biab Electric Build

So... putting together an electric brew kettle is a lesson in patience. I've got 90% of the parts required to put together the AG set up I've decided to go with. I don't have the space or motivation for a 2 or 3 vessel system so single vessel BIAB seemed like the smart choice. Here is a rough...

Bsp Measurements, Someone Set Me Straight!

The thing is the connector pictured above would be equivalent to a threaded pipe screwing into a reportedly 1/2inch TEE. The thing is, even the internal diameter is waaayyyy off 1/2 inch (it's 15mm). It seems that no fitting/pipe external or internal measurements in any 1/2inch BSP item is...

Bsp Measurements, Someone Set Me Straight!

Ok so I'm searching far and wide for the parts required for my weldless sightglass, heating element locknut, ball valve etc and BSP measurements are thoroughly confusing me. I bought this 1" BSP threaded element. Measuring it I found it's NOT 1" it's 1&1/4" (~32mm) I was about to write a stern...

Single Vessel Recirculating Biabucket Trial Run

I'm just starting in AG and have obviously been reading up a lot on the process. I was under the impression that a protein rest was not needed these days as the malts we use are so highly modified the protein conversion is as good as it can be already. I thought a protein rest was a technique...

    Questions On Cheap 2400w Element

OK! So I'm a loose cannon so I've gone ahead and bought the 44cm 2400Watt element and I'm planning on bending it. All up it cost $36 and arrive 17hrs after I clicked "purchase" (the shop is 18km from my house). From a quick inspection of the element this morning it certainly looks like it's...

    Uxcell Elements...

Is there any problem running the 2500W 220V element on a standard 240V? Will it shorten it's life or is it really a non-issue? Also 2500W on 220v = ~12Amps I'll take a wild guess this will trip a standard 10Amp circuit?

    Questions On Cheap 2400w Element

Hey guys, I'm ordering parts for my first electric kettle BIAB setup. The 50L stock pot is on it's way and now i'm just looking for an appropriate element. I've found this one http://www.stoveconnection.com.au/shop/ind...s/kz24hq00.html which is isanely cheap compared to most out there. Has...
