    Digital hydrometer

Hmmm, haven't considered a digital refractometer, is it worth the $$$$ do you think?

    Show us your grain mill

Bump to an old thread! Hadn't seen any grain mill setup brags lately, so thought its time for another! I have been using a drill on my standard (old model) KK Malt Muncher, but thought it's time for an upgrade! I was going to cobble parts of this and that together to get a working gadget, but...

    GUTEN

Your old SSR was 40A, they are capable, but you need to have good heat dissipation to use the higher currents. Do the maths: 3000w divided by 240v= 12.5amps I would at the very least drill air vent holes above and below the SSR heat sink to allow natural convection to occur, cool air will come...

    GUTEN

If I was you, I would leave the compartment lid off for air flow, and maybe get a small CPU cooling fan as well for the heatsink. Those SSR would use a triac component, and they generate a lot of heat when full current is going through them, you need to wick it away as quick as possible. Your...

    Fermenters

Ummmm,.... to temporarily take off the pressure!!!! So you CAN do those things! I have been using a 55L FZ for a few years with no pressure related issues at all, apart from some of the moulded plastic surfaces around the O ring compression seals not being smooth enough on some earlier...

    GUTEN

The cheap stuff can be ok, but you have to pay attention to the dry connections of the series of conductors that make up the extension cords. If there is excessive heat in one spot, at the "dry joint", then that is where the most resistance is, find the reason for that. Usually it's...

Ideas for a new homebrewery garage

Well you could grab a bucket or 2 from the house, but you also have a nice big kettle there...... I usually heat up about 10~15L in the Digiboil to about 50C and use it as a heated keg washer blaster with the same submersible pump and sprinkler nozzle on. Digiknow the Fermzilla fits nicely into...

Ideas for a new homebrewery garage

I usually just capture the first 20L of hot water in a bucket when I turn on the cooling coil from the tap, and use that for hot clean up water, then switch to the barrel water, free hot water that way!

Ideas for a new homebrewery garage

How about a couple of water barrels for crash cooling, one is full, the other empty. Use a 12v submersible pump to feed the cooling coil and recycle into the empty barrel, never waste water that way!

    KegLand Questions and Answers

You could run 2 kettles, 1 electric and one gas kettle. I have done that plenty of times, and it gives a non electric back up system in case the power goes off. I currently run 2 electric mash tun/kettles, an old 35L Guten + 65L Digiboil converted with a malt pipe and external pump to a basic...

I also wrote a first year hops growers guide.

Same as razz, well done Stu. I grow hops (back yard) here in Perth and it was/is difficult to find practical Australian perspective on hop growing especially in super hot summers we get. Order placed, reading it now, looks good! P.S. They're my hops on my avatar.

    1st go conditioning grain

I don't wait at all, takes me about 10~15mins to wet about 13kg, then straight into gristing which takes about 10 mins as well. The husk is very porous and gets tough very quickly so if you wait longer, then the moisture will travel further into the grain and produce a more chunky effect...

    1st go conditioning grain

It does look a little like you may have waited to long between wetting and gristing, but if you don't get any recirculation or sparging problems, then I would be happy as **** about that and not worried about a little bit of efficiency, especially as the batches get bigger!

    MillMaster v MaltZilla Mills

Just feel the grain with your hands if spraying with water, you'll soon get the hang of it.

    MillMaster v MaltZilla Mills

I've been using malt conditioning for a while now, it's the way to go I reckon. I only use a standard 2 roller mill with an old 18v B&D Firestorm drill on low ratio setting, it has plenty of grunt for the job. I think the key is to damp the grain just prior to milling, that way the outer husk...

Will the real Gypsum step forward!

Looks like no one is offering any comments here about the calculators, so I'll sign off by leaving this snippet of info for those who are interested from Iowa State University site (presumably accurate) about Calcium Sulphate. "Gypsum is calcium sulfate (CaSO4). Refined gypsum in the anhydrite...

Will the real Gypsum step forward!

Well, it's not really about the $, that's just an excuse to focus in on a particular subject, but I do enjoy finding alternates sources of all sorts of things, just my curiosity I guess. But what I usually find is that it leads me to a far better understanding of the given subject, the pursuit...

Will the real Gypsum step forward!

In my pursuit of thriftiness, I went in search of an alternate source of Gypsum other than the LHBS, and discovered there seems to be about 3 different basic forms of it with a few sub branches as well. CaSO4 Calcium Sulfate (anhydrite) anhydrous state CAS 7778-18-9 MOL 136.14 CaSO4 2H2O...

Chrome plating completely gone from inside of taps

Soooo, that's why it's sold as anti diarrhoea and antacid products from chemists? Not to mention the use in cosmetics and a heap of other products. And actually lead needs time to leach out of brass and even then it's only the surface layer in contact with the liquid that is it possible to...
