Brewtech SS fermenting vessels discussion thread

Given that there were plenty of breweries using open fermenters and the fact that the wort should be oxygenated, I am curious as well on why you would purge the air with CO2? The CO2 created by the fermentation would displace the air pretty quickly. I have tried to create oversized batches via...

    Keg King Element Carbon layer...scorched.

I suspect that the wort was of a different enough consistency to be scorched this time around. Did you try a stainless souring pad on the element? I would soak it for a few days and then I would use a stainless scouring pad. It sounds like your element has burnt the wort and the issue is that...

    Considering electric boil kettle

2 * 2400 Watt would give you a very vigorous boil - I would suggest that with 4800W, the evaopration rate might be a bit high and if you insulate the kettle / HLT you should be able to switch back to just 2400W assuming you are intending on boiling around 40liters. I know that there were some...

    $70 82l stainless pot - what's the catch?

Zeggie, 2mm would be very good, unless that is only the thickness of the base and the walls are much thinner. Given that they think induction is a means to clean a pot, I would take the description with a grain of salt. For $70, you could barely buy the stainless at the wreckers for that -...

    3600w element - Boiling test

You should get a good boil. I get a good boil with a 3000 watt element for an insulated urn and 50 liters of wort A non insulated urn with 2400 watt element brings 30 liters of water to a boil. Was there anything burnt onto the element that might have inhibited the element?

My Kegs On Legs 6.8kg Tare Weight?

Assuming you weigh it without the regulator I would have expected it to be closer to the Tare weight than what was specified on their website.

Food safe thread sealer - For heating element

I know Keg King have got some for sale and they are reasonably priced. I have purchased silicone muffin bakeware and cut my own. Doesn't look as good but does the trick. There was another thread elsewhere which suggested that some sealants can react with the wort and the sealant then causes off...

    Sparge Arm Size

In the past I have used one of these via a gravity fed HLT and I have not had to use a pump. My setup was the same type of sparge arm dimensions for a 50liter pot. Someone with engineering knowledge should be able to give you a more accurate answer, however I would expect that the inlet pipe...

    C02 Cylinder Question

That is a great price for large CO2 bottles. The time to naturally carbonate should be similar to when you prime your bottles. If you over carbonate you can release some CO2 and get it to where you want it over time. Interesting enough, according to Cheeky Peak brewing on their 6.8KG bottle...

    C02 Cylinder Question

I would assume that they can be used to carbonate beer, however given the very small capacity you would probably naturally carbonate to save on the expensive CO2. It is worth highlighting that while it sounds cheaper when you only spend $8 or $10 on a refill, the capacity is only 0.4KG, so 6.5...

    C02 Cylinder Question

I would check out the CO2 bottles from Keg King which are quite a bit cheaper. They have a swap over service in place which appears to be available elsewhere in Australia. http://www.kegking.com.au/gasbottlesandregulators.html http://www.kegking.com.au/stores.html $199 for a 2.6KG bottle and...

    Watt density does it matter

There are other threads which highlight some of the burnt crud on high density elements. Have a quick search and I am sure you will find a few. Elements heat beyond 100 degrees to get a boil going so if the element is too hot and there is no movement in the boiling wort, it is likely to cover...

    2kw heating element turned black

Depending on where you live, perhaps contact Romar Elements. I had them custom bend two low density elements to the size of my kettle and it was cheaper than buying a bendable element from another vendor. If you want to contact them via email, Robert is the guy I talked to...

    Whitelabs WLP013 London Yeast Query

No problems - My response wasn't very diplomatic either, so apologies for that. The starter was 2.5l at 1.036 so the yeast may have been overwhelmed by the volume available. I am still a bit stumped about the sour taste as I would have thought even nasty cells starting funky fermentations...

    Whitelabs WLP013 London Yeast Query

Thanks for the contributions. Can I mention that I didn't mean to blame the strain and I was asking questions, rather than making accusations. The yeast was purchased in April, so it is entirely my fault for not using it earlier as it would have been in date for a couple of months. The yeast...

    Whitelabs WLP013 London Yeast Query

No, that was not a typo as the good folks at the LHBS told me to expect about 50% viability at the best by date. I was a bit hopeful and without taking their word for it I had "hoped" it would be closer to 40%. Checking with Beer Smith, it suggests about 29% after 6 months and 18% after 8...

    Whitelabs WLP013 London Yeast Query

I am wondering if anyone else had issues with this yeast and experienced "extreme" lag times? WLP013 Yeast Best before date of June 3 - 2014 so it should have had just under 50% of the viable yeast cells I am led to believe. Here is what happened: 20/8 - Evening The Erlenmeyer Flask and...

    60 lire urn

If it is one of the dual walled urns, then it is very likely to be a Keg King product. I had a look a couple of times and for some reason it wasn't in their online catalog. I bought mine a couple of months ago and it is a great unit, even providing a bit of insulation due to its dual wall...
